Whenever I design an online course, there is an image I cannot get out of my mind: a student opening a module at 11pm, tired, in silence, with no one nearby to ask. I won’t be there to clarify a doubt, read the confusion on their face or rescue them if they get lost in the second paragraph of an assignment. That absence changes everything.
Over the years, it has taught me something uncomfortable but liberating: if the course cannot stand on its own, it simply does not stand. If you manage a learning platform, you have probably seen this as often as I have: courses full of content and, at the same time, strangely empty of learning. The folders are packed with PDFs and videos that no one can quite explain. This is not usually a lack of effort; it is often too much goodwill, without an instructional order behind it.
What I want to share here is not a technological trick, but a change in sequence. Good asynchronous design does not begin with the tool or the content. It begins with the end.
Start from the end, not from the syllabus
Before uploading a single reading, ask yourself what you want students to be able to do by the end of the course. Not “which topics will I cover?”, but “what will the learner be able to do?” From there, work backwards.

Every resource, activity and assessment must point towards that goal. This is a brutal but useful filter. When a beautiful video does not contribute to what the student needs to achieve, it stops being enrichment and becomes noise. Whatever does not add value distracts. Backward design helps avoid one of the most common mistakes in online education: confusing the quantity of materials with the depth of learning.
Protect the energy of the student who studies alone
Asynchronous students often learn by themselves and, in many cases, at the most demanding moment of their day: after work, after caring responsibilities, with very little energy left. A saturated module does not communicate rigour; it can communicate abandonment disguised as high expectations.
Fragment the learning journey, organise content from simple to complex, and allow the materials to breathe. One practical strategy that works for me is to divide each unit into blocks of 15 or 20 minutes and close each block by asking students to do something, rather than just read something. Learning happens when information is used, not merely received.
Be present, even when you’re not
For me, this is the heart of asynchronous design. What you do not say aloud must be written with no room for doubt. Embody this intention with these three commitments:
First, write instructions that do not allow two interpretations. If an assignment prompt can be understood in two ways, you will receive both versions. Write as if you will not be available to clarify the task, because in that moment you may not be.
Second, make the criteria visible from day one. Every assessment should be accompanied by a rubric students can read before they begin. A rubric is not only a grading instrument at the end; it is a map that helps students work better from the start.
Third, provide feedback while it can still teach. A correction that arrives three weeks late no longer teaches; it only judges. Build in moments of automatic or instructor-led feedback throughout the learning process, not only at the final submission.
There is also the most human part: allow yourself to be seen and heard. A short welcome video in your own voice, a brief weekly announcement or a forum where you genuinely respond can change how students experience the course.
Research on communities of inquiry has shown for years that when students do not perceive teaching presence, their disengagement increases. The student who feels there is a person behind the screen is more likely to stay. The student who feels they are speaking to a repository is more likely to leave – and I do not blame them.
Design for those who have less
It is worth remembering who we are really designing for. Not every student has a stable internet connection, a personal device or a quiet place to concentrate. A well-designed course offers downloadable materials, videos with subtitles, alternative formats and deadlines that recognise that life happens.
Accessibility is not a requirement to be checked off at the end. In many cases, it is the thin line between a course that includes and a course that unintentionally leaves someone out.
What really matters
Ultimately, designing an asynchronous course is an exercise in anticipated empathy. It means returning to that student at 11pm and asking honestly: does this course accompany them even there? That question, more than any platform or trend, is the real standard of quality.
If I had to leave three ideas for course designers, they would be these: start with competencies and design backwards; treat clear instructions and rubrics as part of the learning content, not as administrative formalities; and make your presence felt, because technology transmits information, but human-centred design transmits support.
The fact that you are not physically present does not have to mean that you are absent. When it is well designed, an asynchronous course continues to guide and support students, even when the instructor is not online in real time. Begin with the final competency, then work backwards to align resources, activities and assessments.
- Break each unit into short learning blocks of about 15 to 20 minutes, each ending with an action the student must complete.
- Treat instructions, rubrics and timely feedback as core learning materials, not as administrative add-ons.
- Include low-bandwidth and accessible options: downloadable materials, subtitles, alternative formats and flexible deadlines.
- Maintain teaching presence through welcome messages, weekly announcements and meaningful participation in forums.
