First Impressions

The words of this week's First Impressions, the competition in which you have to identify the opening sentence of awell-known book, are taken from a chronicle of afamily's brutal murder:

"The village of Holcomb stands on the high wheat plainsof western Kansas, a lonesome area that other Kansans call'out there'."

The winner of last week's competition, who correctly identified Joseph Conrad's Under Western Eyes , is Betty Merridewof Mynachdy, Cardiff.
