This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from an autobiographical record of life in America's South:

"One winter morning in the long-ago, four-year-old days of my life I found myself standing before a fireplace, warming my hands over a mound of glowing coals, listening to the wind whistle past the house outside."

The winner receives a £25 book voucher. The closing date is September 24.

The winner of last week's competition, who identified Nigel Nicholson's Portrait of a Marriage , was Susan Jeffares of Pershore, Worcestershire.
