This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a work by a writer perhaps better known for his screenplays:

"This is my favorite book in the world, though I have never read it."

The winner receives a £25 book voucher. The closing date is August 28.

The winner of last week's competition, who identified Christopher Clark's Iron Kingdom: The Rise and Downfall of Prussia, 1600-1947 , was Ernst Sondheimer of London N6.
