This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, comes from a prizewinning work:

"In the beginning there was only Brandenburg, a territory encompassing some 40,000 square kilometres and centred on the city of Berlin."

The winner receives a £25 book voucher. The closing date is August .
