This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a foot soldier's memoir of his tour of duty:

"It's incredible, it really is, isn't it?"."

The winner receives a £25 book voucher. The closing date is December 17.

The winner of last week's competition, who identified The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins, is Mr S. Choudhury of London N1.
