This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a first novel by a recipient of a "genius grant":

"The evening his master died he worked again well after he ended the day for the other adults, his own wife among them, and sent them back with hunger and tiredness to their cabins."

The winner receives a £25 book voucher. The closing date is June 5.

The winner of last week's competition, who identified Unweaving the Rainbow by Richard Dawkins, was Graham Warren of Nottingham.
