This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a novelist who was once a merchant seaman:

"It was the summer that men first walked on the moon."

The winner receives a £25 book voucher. The closing date is May 15.

The winner of last week's competition, who identified Benoit Mandelbrot's The Fractal Geometry of Nature , was Sindiso Mnisi of the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, Oxford.
