This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a novel by the son of a stonemason:

"There are some fields near Manchester, well known to the inhabitants as 'Green Heys Fields', through which runs a public footpath to a village about two miles distant."

The winner receives a £25 book voucher. The closing date is November 8.
