First Impressions

This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a biographer of the Victorians:

"On November 6, 1817, died the Princess Charlotte, only child of the Prince Regent, and heir to the crown of England."

The winner receives a £25 book voucher. The closing date is May 25.

The winner of last week's competition, who identified Athens: Its Rise and Fall , by Sir Edward Bulwer-Lytton, was Paul Stanistreet of the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education, Leicester.
