First Impressions

This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a novel by an author with a special affinity for the Dorset-Somerset countryside:

"The Sea lost nothing of the swallowing identity of its great outer mass of waters in the emphatic, individual character of each particular wave."
