This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a book that was the author's favourite among his own books:

"Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show."

The winner receives a £25 book voucher. The closing date is August 19.
