This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a novel narrated by a Cambridge scholar:

"In giving to the world the record of what, looked at as an adventure only, is I suppose one of the most wonderful and mysterious experiences ever undergone by mortal men, I feel it is incumbent upon me to explain what my exact connection with it is."

The winner receives a £25 Blackwell's voucher. The closing date is July 15.
