This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a work much admired by Oscar Wilde:

"Judging by the few portraits preserved in the Chteau de Lourps, the Floresses des Esseintes family had been composed in olden times of sturdy campaigners with forbidding faces."
