First Impressions

June 7, 2002

This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a work by a cultural theorist with psychoanalytical tendencies:

"One of the most deplorable aspects of the postmodern era and its so-called 'thought' is the return of the religious dimension in all its guises."

The winner receives a £25 Blackwell's voucher and the closing date is June 11.

Entries, including postal address, should be sent to First Impressions, The THES, Admiral House, 66-68 East Smithfield, London E1W 1BX, faxed to 020 7782 3300 or emailed to theschat@thes.co.uk

The winner of last week's competition, who correctly identified Henry David Thoreau's Resistance to Civil Government (sometimes known as Civil Disobedience ), is Richard Trafford of the University of Portsmouth.
