This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a work by a gothic novelist with a penchant for the macabre:

"For the most wild yet most homely narrative which I am about to pen, I neither expect nor solicit belief."

The winner receives a £25 Blackwell's voucher and
