First Impressions

June 21, 2001

This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a work that links the former Soviet republic of Uzbekistan with a 16th-century English Playwright:

"From jigging veins of rhyming mother-wits,
And such conceits as clownage keeps in pay,
We'll lead you to the stately tent of War..."

The winner receives a £20 book token and
the closing date is September 15.

Entries should be sent to

The winner of last week's competition, who correctly identified Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee at King Arthur's Court , is Alan Stanton of Richmond, Surrey.
