March 5, 1999

This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a work that was banned in the United States until the 1960s:

"I am living at the Villa Borghese. There is not a crumb of dirt anywhere, nor a chair misplaced. We are all alone here and we are dead."

The winner receives a £20 book token and
the closing date is March 9.
