This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, comes from a book that was described by its New Orleans-born author as a "non-fictional" novel: " The village of Holcomb stands on the high wheat plains of western Kansas, a lonesome area that other Kansans call 'out there' ."
