First Impressions competition: 10 April 2008

This week’s competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a Pulitzer prize-winning depiction of a post-apocalyptic world:

“When he woke in the woods in the dark and the cold of the night he’d reach out to touch the child sleeping beside him.”

Entries, including postal address, should be sent to First Impressions, Times Higher Education, 26 Red Lion Square, London WC1R 4HQ, faxed to 020 3194 3300 or e-mailed to chat@timeshighereducation.co.uk

The winner receives a £25 book voucher. The closing date is 16 April.

The winner of last week’s competition, who identified The Magic Toyshop by Angela Carter, is Hanna O’Brien of Dunfermline, Fife
