The role This role sits within the Surrey Academy for Blockchain and Metaverse Applications and supports the delivery of research, funding, and industry engagement activity across emerging technology areas. You will work closely with academic leads and external partners to support funding applications, research coordination, and project delivery. The role is hands-on and suits someone who is organised, curious, and comfortable working across multiple workstreams. Key aspects of the role include: Identifying and tracking relevant research and innovation funding opportunities Supporting preparation of grant applications, including impact, alignment, and compliance sections Coordinating research documentation such as whitepapers, technical notes, and supporting materials Supporting journal submission and academic publication processes Mapping industry ecosystems, partners, and stakeholders in AI, blockchain, immersive and creative technologies Coordinating activity between academics, industry collaborators, and internal teams Maintaining clear records, timelines, and project documentation This is a part-time role (0.3 FTE/10.8 hours per week) available on a fixed term basis until 31 August 2026. Introduction As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT.  The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver on an industry innovation research project where you will be part of the research team to develop software platforms for supporting multi-user AR/VR applications. Key Responsibilities Participate in the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. Undertake one of the three responsibilities: Develop an interactive metaverse application for online education, team collaboration, and workplace training with a focus on real-time interactive simulation. (app developer) Design, build, and implement a multiplayer architecture and backend services for a real-time AR/VR multiplayer system. (network engineer) Design, build, and implement the the game engine for both client and server. (game engine software engineer) Perform testing Perform documentation and optionally publishing paper to international conferences/journals. Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations. Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Job Requirements A degree in Computer Science or relevant field Experience with software development life cycle For app developer role: Strong knowledge in C++ and/or Javascript for 3D/VR applications (e.g., babylon.js, A-Frame, etc.) will be an advantage Experience in developing XR app for teaching & learning/training. Experience developing optimized modules in C#/C++ within Unity and/or Unreal Engine Experience with database management systems For network engineer role: Experience in computer networking, multiplayer architecture, and backend services Experience in connecting backend to various internal and external services and microservices. Deep knowledge in computer network protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, UDP, and other relevant network protocols). Expertise in handling latency, packet loss, and synchronization issues. Expertise in designing a scalable server architecture for handling thousands to millions of concurrent players, Load balancing, auto-scaling, and server instance management. Expertise in securing a multiplayer game network system. Knowledge of encryption techniques to ensure data in transit remains confidential. Prevention measures against common threats like DDoS attacks, SQL injection, and cheating. Experience in multiplayer game services such as Azure PlayFab, AWS GameLift, Google Cloud Servers, and other similar services. Strong knowledge in C++ will be an advantage. Experience with database management systems Familiarity with core engine technologies such as engine architecture and streaming. Job Purpose The Professional Officers Division (POD) houses a centralized pool of academic staff under the Professional Officers scheme. Professional Officers come with specialised and deep technical skills acquired through extensive industry experience. They form the talent pool which brings a much-needed industry perspective to student learning. They facilitate applied learning and applied research in SIT, complementing the academic expertise of the faculty to bring industry practices and applications into the curriculum. Professional Officers leverage on their industry experiences to create authentic learning environments, where discovery and innovation take place. They act as coaches and mentors to students during practical learning activities such as laboratory sessions, Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Professional Officers could also lead or work with faculty on industry innovation projects to provide solutions to the industry. In addition to their role in applied learning and applied research, Professional Officers manage the centralised laboratory facilities and resources in SIT. With Technical Officers, laboratory safety professionals, and administrators in POD, they jointly develop central policies and processes for the safe and seamless operation of laboratories in SIT. Key Responsibilities Design and teach labs & practice modules. Mentor students in Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Lead or co-lead innovation projects with industry. Manage labs and equipment to support academic programmes and applied research. Ensure safety in labs Job Requirements A good degree in Building Services, Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Masters, PhD and/or relevant professional certifications like registered PE/CEng would be advantageous. Deep technical specialist with 10 or more years of working experience with mechanical systems in Building services environments or facility design consultancy would be preferred. Experience in following areas is highly desirable: Both design and management of mechanical building systems. Use of BIM software for design and engineering works and develop BIM models as well as knowledge in using CAD software such as REVIT, AutoDesk and ArchiCAD. Have working knowledge of building services systems such as Heat Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, lift, heat exchangers, micro-climate, simulations, fire-testing and acoustic experiments Have prior working experience in building and facility management Having experience with materials and materials property as well as materials testing, and fire testing is advantageous. Extensive experience and knowledge of industry practices to bring industry perspective to SIT as well as experience with Green Marking and energy management is advantageous. Keen interest in innovation projects, with demonstrated ability in developing solutions to technical problems. Strong supervisory skills and enjoy working closely with students in an educational environment. Demonstrate proficiency to keep abreast of development in the field and pursue professional certification programs. Possess industrial certifications in relevant areas will be an added advantage.

Such questions and their implications for the foundations of physics are the driving force behind our research. You will be part of our team and develop new ideas, technologies and experiments to provide new insights on macroscopic quantum physics, on gravity at small scales and, in the long run, on the phenomenology of the gravity-quantum interface in table-top experiments. Your personal sphere of influence: As a university assistant (praedoc) on this 4 year position, you will be part of the Aspelmeyer group, and you will be exploring fundamentals and applications of macrosopic quantum coherence in levitated solidstate platforms. Our Team is part of the Quantum Optics, Quantum Nanophysics and Quantum Information group of the Faculty of Physics. We are member of the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ), one of the largest quantum hubs in Europe, and of the Austrian Cluster of Excellence (quantA), advancing basic research in quantum sciences, aiming to expand the frontiers of knowledge and thus being the engine for future innovations. You will also benefit from being fellow of the Vienna Doctoral School in Physics (VDSP), being part of a thriving community with more than 100 quantum scientists on premise, about 300 quantum researchers in Vienna. The main research activities of the Aspelmeyer group include quantum optical control of levitated solid state objects, the exploration of their quantum properties for fundamental questions and novel quantum technology platforms, as well as precision measurements of ultra-weak gravitational forces. On the quantum side, we explore the extreme regime of motional quantum states of solids and their interactions to understand how to maximize mass, delocalization, and coherence time in quantum experiments. On the gravity side, we explore the extreme regime of gravitational phenomena of miniature source masses to understand how to isolate gravity from all other interactions on a microscopic scale. Our main motivation is to explore the interface between quantum physics and gravity with new experimental platforms. Your future tasks: You will actively participate in research, teaching & administration. This means: You are involved in a specific and well-funded research project, here focused on exploring fundamentals and applications of quantum entanglement in levitated solid-state platforms. You will present your research plan to the faculty and complete a dissertation agreement within 12-18 months. This will be reviewed and adapted on an annual basis. You will work on your dissertation and towards its completion in time.
