Your personal sphere of influence: As a university assistant prae doc you will join the new team of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Claudia Wutscher, BA and take on tasks such as active participation in teaching as well as in research and publication projects. The team will focus on Austrian and European public law. The employment duration is 4 years. Your future tasks: Dissertation writing: you conduct research on your topic, spend one third of your working time on your dissertation or other independent research activities with the aim of deepening your own professional and scientific knowledge. You collaborate in research, teaching and administrative tasks at the Institute. You participate in audits and evaluation activities. You are involved in student support. You are entrusted with the independent execution of courses and holding of examinations. This is part of your personality: Degree: you have completed your diploma/master's degree in law, which entitles you to study for a doctorate, or an equivalent qualification with a focus on Austrian and European public law. Knowledge and areas of interest: You have demonstrable knowledge and focus of interest in Austrian or European public law, ideally through experience in institute operations and/or teaching experience. In addition, you already have experience or at least willingness in using multimedia teaching and learning formats. You bring specific interests in the research areas focused on in the department (public economic law, law of the eocnomic and monetary union, digital (markets) law, banking and financial markets law, budgetary law, sustainability law, fundamental rights, interplay between EU law and national law). You already have specific ideas for topics, or can envisage writing your dissertation in one of these areas. You have an excellent command of German (at least C1 level) as well as knowledge of foreign languages (English at least C1 level; knowledge of other languages would be an advantage) and, ideally, have already gained experience abroad. You have qualified computer skills in connection with the preparation of legal texts and ready-to-publish manuscripts. About this position: We are currently seeking a Doctoral Researcher (Prae-Doc) to join the FWF ASTRA project RE-SECURE – Remaking Security: Technopolitics in the Global East, led by Dr. Dagmar Vorlíček, at the Department of Sociology. Start date: 1st October 2026 Duration: 4 years Extent: 30 hours/week (0.75 FTE) About the project: RE-SECURE – Remaking Security: Technopolitics in the Global East explores how expertise developed under past political regimes can be renegotiated and adapted for new security purposes. Focusing on Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) as a region marked by profound political transformations from the Cold War to the present, the project rethinks the study of security by theorizing how ways of “doing security” are shaped by history, technology, and global connections. The project will examine both the symbolic and material dimensions of remaking security, while combining desk research, archival work, and field research. By analysing how technoscientific practices interact with societal understandings of risk and global politics, RE-SECURE will develop an original, historically grounded, and decentered perspective on security from the perspective of the “Global East.” Your future tasks: As a doctoral researcher, you will develop your own dissertation project within the framework of RE-SECURE while contributing actively to the collaborative research agenda. Your responsibilities include: Building an independent research profile in sociology of security Developing and conducting a case study on science diplomacy in Austria Planning and executing qualitative empirical research (combining interviews, document analysis, and archival research) Contributing to comparative and conceptual work across the project’s case studies Publishing and presenting research results nationally and internationally Participating in project meetings, workshops, and research activities of the department Contributing to literature reviews, conceptual development, and joint publications of the RE-SECURE team Engaging in the broader academic life of the faculty You will receive structured supervision and mentoring, including support in academic writing, publishing strategies, research design, and grant writing. Description The Water Research Center (WRC) at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) is seeking to recruit a highly motivated Research Scientist to work on advanced membrane technologies for desalination. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Raed Hashaikeh. The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge research on functional membrane development at both bench and pilot scales. Applicants with a strong background in membrane science, materials, and desalination are encouraged to apply. Terms of employment include a competitive salary and benefits. The research focuses on the development of advanced functional materials and processes for sustainable water treatment and desalination. This research is conducted within the Water Research Center (WRC) at NYUAD and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams across mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry, and physics. The candidate will have access to state-of-the-art research facilities and will contribute to projects spanning fundamental materials development to applied pilot-scale systems. Responsibilities of the position include conducting experimental and/or analytical research on membrane-based desalination technologies (e.g., reverse osmosis, forward osmosis, nanofiltration, membrane distillation), developing novel functional materials, designing and executing lab and field studies, analyzing and interpreting data, contributing to publications and patents, and presenting research findings at meetings and conferences. The candidate will also collaborate with local and international research partners and may participate in limited teaching or mentoring activities. Candidate Qualification and Experience Requirements Candidates must hold a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field, with at least 6 years of relevant experience in their field (not including the years obtaining the PhD). The ideal candidate will have a strong publication record, including first-author papers, and demonstrated experience in membrane fabrication and characterization. Familiarity with analytical techniques such as XRD, TGA, DSC, DMA, BET, and porometry is highly desirable. Background in analytical or organic chemistry is an asset. Candidates should possess strong organizational skills, attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.
