The University of Sulaimani is one of the largest public universities in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It was established in 1968 by professor Dr. Mohammed Salih Beg.
The university is spread across five campuses: the Old Campus (located in the city centre), the New Campus, Saidsadiq Campus, Chwarta Campus, and Bakrajo Campus.
Academically, the university is divided into 21 colleges which include the College of Agricultural Engineering Science, College of Dentistry, College of Humanities Education, College of Physical Education and Sport Science, and the College of Veterinary Medicine. Within each college are different departments, which offer a range of both undergraduate and graduate degree programmes.
There are five academic centres at the university: Language and Culture Centre, Gender Equality Centre, Kurdology Centre, Kurdistan Centre for Documentation and Academic Research, Centre for Pedagogical Training and Academic Development, and the Cisco Centre.
The university is situated in Sulaymaniyah, a city in the east of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Home to a number of great poets, writers, historians, politicians, scholars and singers such as Nalî, Mahwi, and Piramerd, Sulaymaniyah is known as the "City of Culture".
