Opening its doors in 1910, this public research university of 15,000 students has two main campuses, one in Hattiesburg and one in Long Beach, with additional teaching and research sites. The Gulf Park campus in Long Beach, with its Spanish Mission-style buildings, is situated on the Gulf of Mexico and, unsurprisingly given its location, key research areas include marine and coastal sciences. Other areas of research strength include polymer and high performance materials.

The University of Southern Mississippi offers more than 90 undergraduate programmes, more than 80 graduate courses and study abroad programmes in 19 countries. The institution also has particularly strong arts programmes with courses across the four subject areas of theatre, dance, art and music. The university’s 16 athletic teams are the Golden Eagles and famous alumni include NBA star Clarence Weatherspoon. 

The Hattiesburg campus with its oak trees, green spaces, brick walkways and Barnes & Noble bookstore, is about 90 minutes’ drive from the city of New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. One of the many attractions on campus is the All-American Rose Garden. Anyone caught picking the roses, which attract international visitors, faces a fine. The beachfront Gulf Park campus was badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and has since undergone a successful rebuilding programme. Despite the intensity of the hurricane, a magnificent 500-year-old tree on campus, known as the Friendship Oak, survived the storm.

Since 2013, each campus has been home to an impressive bronze sculpture of a golden eagle, Lofty Return, who symbolises the institution’s role in helping students to “take flight” while encouraging alumni to “return to the nest”.

Research Fellow – Machine Learning for Nanoscale Semiconductor Manufacturing

Semiconductor fabrication is one of the most complex and precision-driven forms of manufacturing. At nanometre scales, even subtle variations in process conditions can introduce defects that degrade device performance, reduce yield, and drive up production costs. Addressing this challenge requires new modelling approaches that can capture the full complexity of fabrication processes and enable optimisation before physical manufacturing begins. This project aims to develop advanced deep learning models capable of predicting fabrication outcomes and guiding fabrication recipe optimisation. By learning directly from experimental and process data, these models will enable a shift from iterative, trial-and-error fabrication towards predictive and data-driven manufacturing. We are seeking a highly motivated Machine Learning Researcher to join a multidisciplinary team of fabrication engineers and AI specialists at the University of Southampton, within the School of Electronics and Computer Science, working in the group of Dr Yasir Noori. In this role, you will work at the interface of machine learning and semiconductor engineering, developing models that predict post-fabrication device characteristics from process parameters. You will engage with complex, high-dimensional datasets derived from real fabrication workflows, including microscopy, spectroscopy, and electrical performance measurements. You will work closely with fabrication engineers to translate physical processes into machine learning models, design and train deep learning architectures, and evaluate their ability to generalise across different process conditions. The models you develop will not remain confined to the research lab, but will be validated experimentally and tested at an industrial scale in collaboration with global companies in semiconductor fabrication and electronic design automation. The position offers a rare opportunity to apply machine learning to an important technical challenge with substantial potential impact. You will also be involved in supervising PhD students and junior researchers and play a central role in shaping the research direction of the team. Your work is also expected to contribute to the development of innovative technologies with a clear pathway to commercialisation through the spinout company Deep Fabrication, to influence how semiconductor manufacturing is approached in practice. The role will provide you with deep exposure to nanofabrication processes, experience working with industry-relevant datasets and problems, and the opportunity to publish in leading journals and conferences. It is particularly well-suited to candidates who are motivated by applying machine learning to real-world systems where the underlying physics is complex and not fully understood. This position is offered for 24 months in the first instance, with the possibility of extension for a further 12 months. As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver an industry innovation research project as part of a research team developing molecular and sequencing workflows for microbial characterization. The work supports the rapid detection of microbial bioburden in biopharmaceutical cleaning validation using a Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) biosensor platform. Responsibilities include next-generation sequencing (NGS), qPCR-based molecular assays for microbial quantification and aptamer validation, and experimental support for aptamer discovery targeting environmental microorganisms listed in the US Pharmacopeia. Key Responsibilities Technical Responsibilities Perform microbial community characterization using next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms such as Illumina sequencing or Oxford Nanopore sequencing.  Design and perform qPCR-based molecular assays for microbial quantification and aptamer validation. Prepare DNA sequencing libraries, including nucleic acid extraction, amplification, and library preparation.  Conduct basic bioinformatics processing of sequencing data, including sequence quality control and taxonomic profiling where required. Support aptamer discovery and validation experiments, including nucleic acid preparation, amplification, and molecular characterization. Perform routine molecular biology techniques such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA purification, and nucleic acid quantification. Maintain accurate laboratory records and experimental documentation. Research & Project Responsibilities Plan and execute experimental workflows to support project milestones related to microbial detection and biosensor development. Contribute to sequencing-based microbial profiling of environmental and cleaning validation samples. Work collaboratively with project investigators and interdisciplinary teams to integrate sequencing and molecular biology results with biosensor development. Prepare technical reports and contribute to scientific publications, presentations, and project documentation. Support generation of experimental data required for project validation and milestone reporting. Operational Responsibilities Ensure laboratory compliance with Work Safety and Health (WSH) regulations and institutional safety guidelines. Manage procurement and inventory of molecular biology and sequencing consumables. Maintain laboratory equipment used for molecular biology and sequencing workflows. Mentorship Support training of junior researchers, research assistants, and students where required.  Contribute to knowledge sharing within the research group. To communicate in any relevant internal or external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any ad-hoc duties assigned by Supervisor. Job Requirements Essential Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Bioengineering, or a related field. Possessing a Master’s or PhD degree will be advantageous Hands-on experience with next-generation sequencing technologies, such as Illumina or Oxford Nanopore sequencing platforms including sequencing library preparation Demonstrated experience working with environmental or low-biomass microbial samples. Strong laboratory skills in molecular biology techniques. Preferred  Familiarity with microbial community sequencing workflows such as 16S rRNA sequencing or metagenomic analysis. We are seeking an Associate Lecturer/Lecturer in Clinical Education with expertise in Exercise and Sport Science and Exercise Physiology to contribute to high quality, practice oriented teaching that prepares graduates for contemporary health and clinical practice.
