Established in 1218, Salamanca University in northwest Spain is one of the oldest institutions in Europe and the country's first higher education institute.

The prestigious university, which teaches about 30,000 students, has been dubbed the ”Oxford of Spain“ and is an important centre for the study of the humanities. Salamanca University also has campuses in Ávila, Béjar and Zamora.

Salamanca University is made up of the colleges of law, liberal arts, and science and medicine, as well as other academic units, and there are more than 250 academic programmes on offer. 

The institution began teaching Spanish language and cultural courses in 1929 and attracts more than 4,000 foreign language learners each year. The year-round Spanish language programme is taught in the Escuelas Menores building where graduating students once wrote their signatures on its walls in an ink made of bull’s blood, olive oil and herbs. The university's motto roughly translates as "what nature doesn't give, Salamanca doesn't provide".

University alumni include Don Quixote author Miguel de Cervantes, Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés, and the film director Alexander Payne, who directed About Schmidt and Sideways.

Salamanca, which has a population of about 170,000 people, is about two hours' drive from Madrid. It is known as ”La Dorada“, or the Golden City, because of the ”glow“ given off by its sandstone buildings. Its Old City, home to Plaza Mayor, two cathedrals and the House of Shells, has Unesco World Heritage Centre status. In 2002, the city was named European Capital of Culture.

The Senior Video Editor draws on extensive experience and technical knowledge to produce both video editing and animation that supports the Faculty's strategic, learning and innovation related projects as well as operational requirements. Your key responsibilities will be to: edit and animate highly engaging and effective learning media content to support and enhance educational media projects work collaboratively with LIO colleagues to develop and integrate sophisticated animation sequences into a wide-ranging post-production slate co-design post-production workflows so that the team can manage scale and volume effectively produce highly engaging edits, animations and digital assets as required. The McCarthy Lab has an exciting opportunity for a prospective Research Technician who is interested in synthetic biology approaches to engineer biofilms to better tackle environmental challenges. You will be joining a highly interdisciplinary project, where we will blend synthetic biology, environmental engineering, and biotechnology to develop disruptive solutions to major environmental challenges. Experience with advanced cloning systems, CRISPR tools, metagenomic mining and the use of different biofilm imaging platforms is highly desirable. There will be a particular focus on developing approaches to harness bacterial community behaviours like biofilm formation to better tackle environmental pollutants such as waste plastics. Our aim is to leverage cutting-edge advancements in synthetic biology and biofilm engineering to develop innovative strategies for bioremediation, with a key focus on scalable solutions that can be readily adopted by the waste and water sectors. This fast-paced project will give the successful candidate the opportunity to develop new skills by working closely with our interdisciplinary team and build their international profile including through research visits to academic collaborators and working with SMEs. The successful candidate will be responsible for accurate and efficient data generation, data management, collation and the reporting of results to the project lead. The post-holder will need to demonstrate excellent attention to detail, organisational, team working and communication skills and have a keen interest in drafting research outputs for peer-review publication. The successful applicant will work closely with other researchers within the McCarthy Lab and with other EBIC partners. There will also be opportunities to explore the commercial  Applicants must have a BSc or MSc in a relevant discipline. Experience and knowledge in the field of biofilm formation is essential. Experience in some or all of the following: advanced cloning systems, CRISPR tools, metagenomic mining and the use of different biofilm imaging platforms is highly desirable. They should be enthusiastic, well motivated and be able to work both independently and collaboratively. This position is available for 32 months.
