The University of Victoria (UVic), located in Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, is one of Canada’s top research universities.

It offers degree programmes to more than 20,000 students, 3,446 of them graduate students, with a current male to female ratio of 47:53.

UVic sits at the southern end of Vancouver Island, off Canada’s Pacific coast. It is 15 minutes away from the city’s downtown and a short distance from both Vancouver and the US border – Seattle is a 50 minute flight away.

With research strengths in several areas, including ocean science, engineering, maths, data science and computer science, as well as creativity and culture, the university lays claims to 47 faculty members (current and former) who are elected fellows of the Royal Society of Canada, the nation's highest academic honour for career achievement. It also boasts 36 faculty members who hold highly-prized Canada Research Chairs.

UVic is a young institution. It received degree-granting status in 1963, although its origins can be traced back to 1903, to the founding of Victoria College, an affiliate of McGill University in Montreal.

The university prides itself on having a culture of innovation, discovery and creativity. It also includes civic engagement as a key part of its mission, with faculty and students encouraged to work collaboratively with both community and international partners to address global issues.

With an extensive network of university partners, UVic offers 100 or so study abroad programmes in 25 countries around the world. Its Division of Continuing Studies, which emphasises individual courses for personal and professional development, serves an additional 16,000 students annually.

UVic students have access to a vast range of cultural attractions, including international film, music and art festivals. Popular outdoor pursuits include hiking, sailing, skiing and kayaking. Victoria’s mild climate (the area is home to the warmest winters in Canada) allows golfers and tennis fans to play outside sports all year long.

SIT is strengthening its capabilities in Aerospace Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO), building a cohort of faculty who are experienced in solving real-world aerospace maintenance challenges through applied research and innovation. Focus areas for Aerospace MRO include: Smart Maintenance & Predictive Diagnostics Digital Twins & Lifecycle Engineering Robotics & Autonomous Inspection Systems Composite Structures Inspection & Repair Advanced Repair Technologies (e.g. Additive Manufacturing) Responsibilities: Design, develop, and teach laboratory sessions and practice-based modules in Aerospace MRO and related areas. Lead or co-lead innovative applied research and industry collaboration projects with industry partners and government agencies. Secure and manage research grants to support applied research initiatives. Supervise and mentor students in applied research projects, Capstone Projects, and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Manage laboratory facilities, equipment, and technical resources to support academic programmes and applied research activities. Ensure compliance with laboratory safety policies, procedures, and best practices. Contribute to the development of applied Aerospace MRO capabilities, learning resources, and industry-relevant curriculum support. Qualifications: A good Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline. Your personal sphere of influence: You will join the Department of Environmental Geosciences (EDGE) at the Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science (CeMESS) to investigate p phenylenediamine (PPD) tire antioxidants and their quinone transformation products (PPD Qs). The project you will be working on studies tire antioxidant chemicals (PPDs) and their quinone products (PPD‑Qs) released by tire and road wear, and investigates how their properties affect transport across cell membranes, binding to blood proteins, and effects on human cells. The objectives are to measure passive transport and distribution (including plasma protein and membrane lipid binding); to quantify cytotoxicity in human intestinal and lung cell models; and to determine whether the observed effects fit baseline (narcosis) toxicity or reflect specific mechanism. Using a set of PPDs and PPD‑Qs, the work links in vitro effect levels to plausible human exposures and compares current antiozonants with potential replacements. Your future tasks: You actively participate in research, teaching, and administration, which means that you will: Plan and execute experiments to quantify passive transport, membrane partitioning, and plasma protein binding for selected PPDs and PPD Qs, ensuring appropriate test conditions and quality control. Generate concentration–response data in intestinal and lung cell models to compare toxicity across ingestion  and inhalation relevant tissues. Perform mechanistic studies to differentiate baseline toxicity from specific mode of toxic action. Analyze how lipophilicity and electrophilicity relate to transport, binding, and cellular outcomes. Manage data analysis and documentation; contribute to manuscripts and presentations. Progress your dissertation; contribute to teaching and administrative tasks; supervise undergraduate/master’s students as appropriate. This is part of your personality: M.Sc. in toxicology, environmental chemistry, environmental sciences, or a related field. Excellent written and spoken English (at least level C1). Laboratory experience. Experience with LC-MS/MS. Ability to perform concentration–response testing and statistical analyses. About the University As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The Role We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Research Fellow to join an exciting industry-funded applied research project within the Infocomm Technology cluster at SIT. This project addresses the critical challenge of enabling ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) with priority-aware offloading for public safety services. The successful candidate will be responsible for the end-to-end investigation of novel edge-assisted computation offloading strategies that leverages edge intelligence. The role will bridge rigorous theoretical work with hands-on offloading algorithm design and development. The core responsibility is to build and validate these offloading strategies, complete with Python application programming interfaces (APIs), through rigorous simulations and proof-of-concept (PoC) trials. This position is ideal for a researcher with a passion for solving complex problems at the intersection of wireless communications, edge computing, and machine learning, and who is eager to translate theoretical insights into practical systems. Key Responsibilities Derive and analyse closed-form mathematical expressions for latency and offloading probabilities across edge-only, cloud-only, and edge-cloud computation offloading algorithms. Design and develop robust Python APIs for edge-only, cloud-only, and edge-cloud computation offloading algorithms. Set up network testbeds integrating hardware, software, and communication protocols to validate edge-only, cloud-only, and edge-cloud computation offloading algorithms. Conduct rigorous simulations and live PoC trials to ensure computation offloading algorithms meets URLLC targets for public safety services. Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI) to ensure all project deliverables are met. Job Requirements A Ph.D./Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Communications Engineering, Computer Science, or a highly related discipline. A strong theoretical foundation and research background in wireless communications and edge computing. Strong publication track record in top-tier conferences and journals in the areas of wireless communications, IoT, or edge computing. Demonstrated proficiency in software API and algorithm development of edge intelligence algorithms using Python. Knowledge of machine learning or reinforcement learning techniques is highly advantageous. Experience with theoretical wireless network modelling, particularly stochastic geometry or queuing theory, is highly advantageous.
