About the University of Tsukuba

Basic information and contact details for the University of Tsukuba

The University of Tsukuba was founded in 1973, following the relocation of its predecessor the Tokyo University of Education to the city of Tsukuba.

The university’s main campus is spread across 258 hectares and is still located in the Tsukuba Science City, a science park developed in the 1960s. One in 10 of the residents in Tsukuba is a researcher. The city, which is northeast of Tokyo, is also home to more than 30 per cent of Japan’s national research institutes.

The University of Tsukuba also has a campus in Tokyo, which offers graduate-level evening courses.

The institution has a particular focus on interdisciplinary studies and internationalisation, with international cooperation agreements with North Africa and Central Asia.

Around 70 current and former students at the institution have participated in the Olympic Games. The university also does research and offers courses on the international sporting event.

Meanwhile, the university is home to three Nobel laureates: former presidents of the institution Sin-Itiro Tomonaga and Leo Esaki won the physics prizes in 1965 and 1973 respectively, while professor emeritus Hideki Shirakawa won the chemistry prize in 2000.

Jigoro Kano, the founder of the Kodokan Institute, the headquarters of the worldwide judo community, was the leader of the Higher Normal School and Tokyo Higher Normal School, which were antecedents to the university.

The institution’s slogan is: “Imagine the future”.

Tsukuba is a city in the northern Kantō region of Japan. Mount Tsukuba, also known as the “purple mountain” is famous for its double peaks.

You will join a supportive and ambitious Property and Built Environment team where your contribution will be highly valued and multidisciplinary, extending beyond core Building Surveying to support our BSc (Hons) Real Estate, Architectural Technology, and Housing programmes, alongside our postgraduate MSc offerings. We are particularly interested in candidates with strong practical expertise in building pathology, construction technology (both commercial and residential), sustainable retrofit, and the integration of building services. You will step into key module leadership roles, providing vital cross-disciplinary support to alleviate current faculty workloads in foundational technology, architectural principles, property development, and housing management. You will:  Take on the leadership and delivery of core modules, specifically focusing on Pathology and Inspection and advanced Construction Technology. Lead or co-lead Sustainable Buildings modules, guiding students through energy assessments, BREEAM/SAP principles, and sustainable retrofit strategies. Act as a support tutor for foundational modules and provide teaching support in Property Development, Real Estate, and Housing. Supervise undergraduate research projects and postgraduate MSc dissertations across a wide variety of built environment topics. Act as a Personal Tutor, providing academic and pastoral support to enhance the student experience and career planning. Engage with Industrial Liaison Panels and organize professional body guest speakers and site visits. You will hold a degree in Building Surveying, Building Services Engineering, Real Estate, Architectural Technology, or Housing Studies. Professional accreditation is essential, and you should be a Chartered Member of a relevant body such as RICS, CABE, CIOB, CIBSE, or CIH. You will demonstrate extensive practical experience across the property lifecycle, including diagnosing building defects, structural appraisal, and the management of complex building services. Your Key Responsibilities as a Postdoctoral Research Associate (Level A): Deliver innovative treatments for eating disorders as part of a clinical trial team, including novel personalised psychotherapy packages for eating disorders, a new brain training and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) package and clinician-guided digital therapies. Deliver high-quality psychological therapy to trial participants under trial conditions, according to protocol and therapy manual, ensuring adherence to ethical and clinical research standards while maintaining participant safety, engagement, and treatment integrity.Conduct high-quality research contributing to the co-design, development and testing of a new personalised measurement-based Single Session Intervention for young people with emerging or full-syndrome eating disorders. Analyse quantitative and qualitative data, prepare ethics and governance documentation, and contribute to publications, reports, conference presentations and other research outputs that advance discipline knowledge. Conduct research and scholarly activities, independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, contributing to the advancement of knowledge within the discipline. Develop and refine research capabilities under the guidance of senior academic staff, progressively taking ownership of project milestones, timelines and research activities and building toward increasing independence. Support and mentor students and junior team members where appropriate, while fostering a collaborative, inclusive and respectful team culture aligned to the values of the InsideOut Institute and University of Sydney.
