Granted its Royal Charter in 1967, the University of Stirling is Scotland’s youngest university. As well as being a major heritage site, Stirling’s stunning campus was also ranked 1st for its environment by International Student Barometer in 2016. Encompassing a loch and a golf course, the 330-acre parkland campus sits at the point where Lowland and Highland Scotland meet, in the shadow of the Ochil Hills. The university also has other campuses – one in the Highlands, which offers a wide variety of medicine and teaching courses, and another in the Western Isles, situated close to Stornoway. Considered one of Scotland’s leading universities for sport, Stirling has strong sporting alumni associated with it, including professional golfer Gordon Sherry and Olympic swimmer Todd Cooper and has a number of excellent sporting facilities. It also ranks among the top research-intensive universities in the UK with strengths in the fields of health and wellbeing, the environment and people, culture and society, enterprise and the economy, as well as sport. With a cohort of almost 14,000, students make up over a quarter of the total population of Stirling. International students number around 20 per cent of the whole and represent more than 120 nationalities between them. The university is organised across five academic faculties and offers a range of flexible courses and study abroad opportunities A recent large-scale infrastructure investment in the university's campuses has resulted in refurbished student accommodation and improved library facilities. The main Stirling campus also benefits from a wide range of restaurants and cafes, a 50 metre swimming pool, a publicly accessible art collection and the Macrobert Arts Centre comprising a theatre, cinema and bars. The centre of Stirling, just a ten minute bus ride away, is a compact city that maintains a strong community feel.

As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver an industry innovation research project as part of a research team developing molecular and sequencing workflows for microbial characterization. The work supports the rapid detection of microbial bioburden in biopharmaceutical cleaning validation using a Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) biosensor platform. Responsibilities include next-generation sequencing (NGS), qPCR-based molecular assays for microbial quantification and aptamer validation, and experimental support for aptamer discovery targeting environmental microorganisms listed in the US Pharmacopeia. Key Responsibilities Technical Responsibilities Perform microbial community characterization using next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms such as Illumina sequencing or Oxford Nanopore sequencing.  Design and perform qPCR-based molecular assays for microbial quantification and aptamer validation. Prepare DNA sequencing libraries, including nucleic acid extraction, amplification, and library preparation.  Conduct basic bioinformatics processing of sequencing data, including sequence quality control and taxonomic profiling where required. Support aptamer discovery and validation experiments, including nucleic acid preparation, amplification, and molecular characterization. Perform routine molecular biology techniques such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA purification, and nucleic acid quantification. Maintain accurate laboratory records and experimental documentation. Research & Project Responsibilities Plan and execute experimental workflows to support project milestones related to microbial detection and biosensor development. Contribute to sequencing-based microbial profiling of environmental and cleaning validation samples. Work collaboratively with project investigators and interdisciplinary teams to integrate sequencing and molecular biology results with biosensor development. Prepare technical reports and contribute to scientific publications, presentations, and project documentation. Support generation of experimental data required for project validation and milestone reporting. Operational Responsibilities Ensure laboratory compliance with Work Safety and Health (WSH) regulations and institutional safety guidelines. Manage procurement and inventory of molecular biology and sequencing consumables. Maintain laboratory equipment used for molecular biology and sequencing workflows. Mentorship Support training of junior researchers, research assistants, and students where required.  Contribute to knowledge sharing within the research group. To communicate in any relevant internal or external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any ad-hoc duties assigned by Supervisor. Job Requirements Essential Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Bioengineering, or a related field. Possessing a Master’s or PhD degree will be advantageous Hands-on experience with next-generation sequencing technologies, such as Illumina or Oxford Nanopore sequencing platforms including sequencing library preparation Demonstrated experience working with environmental or low-biomass microbial samples. Demonstrated experience with DNA extraction and PCR amplification Demonstrated experience performing qPCR assays for nucleic acid quantification and molecular analysis, including troubleshooting Demonstrated experience with aptamer technologies or nucleic acid-based molecular recognition systems. Strong laboratory skills in molecular biology techniques. Preferred  Familiarity with microbial community sequencing workflows such as 16S rRNA sequencing or metagenomic analysis. Demonstrated experience with bioinformatics tools for sequencing data processing (e.g., quality control, taxonomic classification, microbial community analysis).  Demonstrated experience working in interdisciplinary or industry-linked research projects. Key Competencies Strong experimental design and troubleshooting skills in molecular biology.  Ability to independently conduct laboratory experiments and manage datasets. Strong scientific communication skills, including technical reporting and presentations. Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary research teams. Research Fellow – Machine Learning for Nanoscale Semiconductor Manufacturing

Semiconductor fabrication is one of the most complex and precision-driven forms of manufacturing. At nanometre scales, even subtle variations in process conditions can introduce defects that degrade device performance, reduce yield, and drive up production costs. Addressing this challenge requires new modelling approaches that can capture the full complexity of fabrication processes and enable optimisation before physical manufacturing begins. This project aims to develop advanced deep learning models capable of predicting fabrication outcomes and guiding fabrication recipe optimisation. By learning directly from experimental and process data, these models will enable a shift from iterative, trial-and-error fabrication towards predictive and data-driven manufacturing. We are seeking a highly motivated Machine Learning Researcher to join a multidisciplinary team of fabrication engineers and AI specialists at the University of Southampton, within the School of Electronics and Computer Science, working in the group of Dr Yasir Noori. In this role, you will work at the interface of machine learning and semiconductor engineering, developing models that predict post-fabrication device characteristics from process parameters. You will engage with complex, high-dimensional datasets derived from real fabrication workflows, including microscopy, spectroscopy, and electrical performance measurements. You will work closely with fabrication engineers to translate physical processes into machine learning models, design and train deep learning architectures, and evaluate their ability to generalise across different process conditions. The models you develop will not remain confined to the research lab, but will be validated experimentally and tested at an industrial scale in collaboration with global companies in semiconductor fabrication and electronic design automation. The position offers a rare opportunity to apply machine learning to an important technical challenge with substantial potential impact. You will also be involved in supervising PhD students and junior researchers and play a central role in shaping the research direction of the team. Your work is also expected to contribute to the development of innovative technologies with a clear pathway to commercialisation through the spinout company Deep Fabrication, to influence how semiconductor manufacturing is approached in practice. The role will provide you with deep exposure to nanofabrication processes, experience working with industry-relevant datasets and problems, and the opportunity to publish in leading journals and conferences. It is particularly well-suited to candidates who are motivated by applying machine learning to real-world systems where the underlying physics is complex and not fully understood. This position is offered for 24 months in the first instance, with the possibility of extension for a further 12 months.
