Established in 14th century by Pope Clement VI, the University of Pisa is one of the oldest public educational institutions in Italy and among the 20 oldest surviving universities around the world. 

The university has been recognised for its research centres internationally and prides itself on being the first university to launch a computer science degree in Italy. Its extensive range of undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD courses is taught primarily in Italian. 

Students can explore a variety of subjects including law, cultural studies, engineering, medicine and business administration - taught in twenty departments. The academic institution also includes 17 libraries and 13 museums. 

The university has an arrangement to share facilities and exchange academics with Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies, which together form a consortium of higher educations institutions in the town, called the Pisa University System. 

The university has also built strong ties with prestigious Pisan Institutes of the National Board of Research and the growing information technology industry, which flourished in Tuscany over recent decades. 

Located in a city with fewer than 100,000 inhabitants, the University of Pisa offers an enjoyable campus life experience, which goes beyond visiting the famous leaning tower in Pisa. Students can immerse themselves in Pisa’s cultural life by exploring various restaurants and bars in the area, but also by attending museums and theatres. 

Notable figures connected with the University of Pisa include the father of modern physics Galileo Galilei, who studied and later taught mathematics, and the Nobel Prize-winners in physics Enrico Fermi and Carlo Rubia.

The newly established Faculty of Science at the University of Macau (UM) invites applications for the position of Full/Associate/Assistant Professor in Computational and AI Biology. This recruitment supports the launch of the new Department of Biological Sciences, part of UM’s strategic initiative to strengthen its foundation in fundamental and applied sciences. As part of UM’s broader academic development plan, the university is undertaking a major structural expansion by restructuring and establishing five faculties in science and technology. Among them, the Faculty of Science will be formed based on relevant program of the current Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) and Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS). The new Faculty will include the Department of Biological Sciences, Department of Chemistry, Department of Physics, and Department of Mathematics. The establishment of the Department of Biological Sciences will enhance the faculty’s multidisciplinary ecosystem and foster cross-cutting collaborations in emerging areas of science and technology. The Department of Biological Sciences strives to excel in both fundamental and applied research in biological sciences, particularly in areas of omics, computational biology, AI-driven biology, and generative biology. We seek candidates with expertise in these areas, especially those whose research leverages computational and AI technologies to address fundamental biological questions. Successful candidates are expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, curriculum development, and student mentorship, while establishing internationally competitive research programs. Qualifications Applicants should hold a PhD in disciplines closely related to the areas specified above, preferably with a strong background in biology. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate a strong publication record, the ability to establish and lead an impactful research program addressing significant biological questions, a commitment to high-quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and active contribution to the development and growth of the Department and Faculty. Remuneration A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP1,250,200 (approximately USD154,350) for the position of Full Professor, MOP1,052,800 (approximately USD129,980) for the position of Associate Professor and MOP855,400 (approximately USD105,600) for the position of Assistant Professor will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The School of Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton is seeking to recruit a Research Fellow in Phanerozoic Ocean Biogeochemistry and Earth System Evolution. The successful applicant will work on the development and application of the cGENIE Earth system model for the NERC Pushing the Frontiers project “Determining extinction correlates on geological timescales”, under the supervision of institutional lead Dr. Richard Stockey and in collaboration with team members at the University of Oxford (Project Lead Prof. Erin Saupe) and the University of Leeds (Project Co-Lead Prof. Ben Mills). The post holder will specifically work to generate a series of reconstructive models of 3D ocean biogeochemistry through the Phanerozoic (last ~540 million years). A key focus of this role is to explore uncertainty in three-dimensional ocean biogeochemistry over this time interval and its implications for geochemical proxy records and marine ecosystems. This is a relatively short-term, specialist Earth system modelling position (15-month duration). The post holder is therefore expected to have prior experience in intermediate complexity Earth system modelling and experience integrating key components of Earth system evolution on these timescales, or a strong track record in developing and deploying new skills in computational Earth Science research. The successful candidate will either hold, or be nearing completion of, a relevant PhD/DPhil and will have appropriate research experience alongside strong subject-specific expertise. They should be capable of working independently within established research programmes, managing their own research activities and contributing to academic publications. Strong communication skills are essential, including the ability to present research ideas and findings clearly, as well as representing the research group effectively in meetings and collaborative discussions.
