The University of Pavia in Italy, founded in 1361, is one of the oldest higher education institutions in the world,
Located 35 kilometres from Milan, it was the only university to exist in Milan – and the greater region of Lombardy – until as recently as the 20th century.
Today, it caters for up to 24,000 students who flock to it from across Italy, as well as many different countries around the world.
Students have the choice of over 80 undergraduate programmes, over 42 master’s programmes and around 20 doctoral programmes. These are offered across 18 departments, which are complimented by the university’s 30 libraries.
Of its student body, around 1,500 are international and their courses are taught in English. Pavia prides itself on the strength of its global outlook and has more than 400 partnerships in place with universities and institutes worldwide, as well as over 700 ERASMUS exchange agreements.
Since 1987, through what is called CICOPS, Pavia has continued to promote cooperation with universities in developing countries seeking to encourage joint research initiatives and innovation. It also takes part in the Marco Polo programme, which only a handful of Italian universities are engaged with, which seeks to increase the amount of Chinese students studying in Italy, offering help with language classes.
Pavia is a member of the Coimbra Group and European University Association. Two main points of interest at the university include its botanical garden and its history museum.
The town of Pavia is known for its art and culture, possessing historic buildings and ancient churches alongside museums, libraries, cinemas and theatres that line its narrow streets.

Lecturer (Product Design) The School of Spatial & Product Design, within the Faculty of Design, seeks to appoint a Lecturer for Product Design. Reporting to the Head of School and Programme Leader, you will teach in the BA (Hons) Product Design programme, contributing to a dynamic studio environment that integrates conceptual thinking, material exploration and emerging technologies. The ideal candidate should have the expertise and ability to teach in one or more of the following areas: product and industrial design, digital and rapid prototyping, fabrication technologies, material experimentation, design for manufacture, interaction between analogue and digital processes, and interdisciplinary design practices spanning art, science and technology. As lecturer, your key responsibilities include academic preparation, teaching and delivery of specialised knowledge/skills and cognitive-based contents to ensure students’ learning objectives are met. You will work collaboratively with teams within/across programmes and Faculty to enhance the strategic and organisational plans and ensure that the programme achieves its strategic ambitions and objectives. You will contribute to a studio culture that bridges conceptual design thinking with hands-on making, supporting the integration of workshop-based practices with design studio teaching. This includes fostering an environment where experimentation, prototyping and iterative development are central to learning. You should be comfortable working across both analogue and digital platforms, and be able to guide students in navigating these intersections. Other responsibilities include coordination of academic learning activities, academic administration and organisation, feedback on assignments, conducting assessments and marking, student mentoring and recruitment. You will also contribute to the academic development of the programme, work as a team and be involved in specific programme activities, projects, exhibitions and other cross-faculty initiatives. The role may also involve contributing to the development of workshop culture within the School, supporting the alignment between technical skill-building and conceptual design inquiry, and participating in interdisciplinary collaborations across programmes and Faculties. Requirements: Postgraduate qualification, preferably at PhD level, or equivalent in a relevant discipline. At least five years of tertiary-level teaching experience with knowledge of Higher Education Quality Assurance Framework and at least three years of full-time relevant professional practice. For Senior Lecturer, at least nine years and above or the equivalent of postgraduate teaching experience in practice-based arts at tertiary level and six years of proven track record of professional experience in related design fields or and/or tertiary design education with a PhD qualification. Substantive professional practice in the areas of product design, industrial design, fabrication and prototyping, material innovation, or related design fields. Demonstrated expertise in integrating analogue and digital design methodologies, including workshop-based processes and emerging fabrication technologies. Relevant knowledge of design history and theory and adequate involvement in relevant design practice and/or have established research projects and publications. A passion for teaching with the ability to nurture and encourage excellence in teaching and student learning. Possess excellent communication, organisational and team working skills and academic administrative skills. A positive attitude to research, and preferably a personal research profile. The successful candidate should also demonstrate capability and interest in the following areas: Bridging design, art and craft practices within studio-based teaching, fostering a strong relationship between conceptual thinking and making. Strong engagement with material exploration, making, and iterative prototyping as central to the design process. Ability to guide students in scaled model-making as a design methodology, with emphasis on proportion, form, detail, and texture. Experience in integrating physical computing (e.g. sensors, motors, microcontrollers) into product or spatial design outcomes. Familiarity with hybrid workflows that combine analogue making with digital design and fabrication processes. Interest in supporting a distributed studio-makerspace model, where making is embedded within daily studio practice rather than confined to workshops. Ability to operate across interdisciplinary domains spanning design, technology, science, and craft. Experience in developing hands-on workshops, exercises, and experimental learning environments that support exploratory and practice-driven learning. Understanding of contemporary shifts in product design practice, including: sustainability and regenerative approaches, emerging technologies and their impact on authorship, making and fabrication. Description The Center of Astrophysics and Space Science, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit a Junior Research Scientist to work with the Mars Research Group to support scientific investigations of the Martian atmosphere and surface using data from the Emirates Mars Mission (EMM) “Hope” probe. The position contributes to ongoing research, data analysis, simulation efforts, and dissemination of scientific results from Hope observations. The funding for this position is provided by the UAE Space Agency. The successful applicant will; Analyze Emirates Mars Mission (Hope) data: Conduct detailed analysis of atmospheric and surface observations collected by the UAE’s Hope probe to support scientific goals of understanding Martian atmospheric and surface processes. Assist with analysis of additional Mars mission datasets: Examine and interpret complementary data from other Mars missions to strengthen current models and provide comparative insights that enhance research conclusions from Hope observations. Develop Machine Learning methods and run numerical simulations on NYUAD’s High-Performance Computing (HPC) system. Support preparation of scientific manuscripts and presentations: Assist in drafting reports, papers, and conference materials to communicate research findings to the global scientific community. A candidate with a Master’s degree is preferred; however, the minimum requirement is a Bachelor’s degree in physics, computer science, or a related discipline. The role requires strong programming skills in Python, competency in data analysis and scientific computing, and the ability to work with large datasets. The role This postdoctoral research fellow position is a full-time role for the duration of a two-year Leverhulme Trust-funded project examining adolescent boys’ and young adult men’s perspectives on, and experiences of, sexual consent.
