The University of Iowa is a national research university, founded in 1847, a few days after the state of Iowa was accepted into the Union.

It is situated on a 1,900-acre campus on the Iowa River.

The university is home to the world-renowned Iowa Writer’s Workshop, which has produced 13 Pulitzer Prize winners. Recognizing its contribution to creative writing, UNESCO designated Iowa as a City of Literature in 2008.

The university comprises 12 colleges, the largest of which is the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences..

First-year students can explore and personalize their housing options by living in one of the university's 15 Living Learning Communities, Honors House, and 10 residence halls. Students also have a choice of over 500 student organizations to get involved with, as well as over 200 areas of study.

The university is a member of the prestigious Big Ten Conference, the oldest collegiate athletic conference in the US.

Members of its 24 varsity teams wear black and gold and go by the name of ‘Hawkeye’. Their mascot is a hawk named Herky who wears the same colors.

Its Kinnick Stadium has a seating capacity of over 70,000. The university also has a 215,000 square-foot recreation center with three indoor pools, a softball complex, a climbing wall and a high adventure challenge course.

The university was one of the first in the US to award a degree to a woman (in 1873) and to an African American student (in 1879). It was the first state university to recognize the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Allied Union (in 1970).

Each year, the university’s Division of Performing Arts stages over 400 dramatic performances, while its art museum houses 14,500 individual works of art.

Alumni of the university include author Tennessee Williams, and actors Gene Wilder and Ashton Kutcher.

We are currently seeking to hire a Senior Software Engineer to contribute to the development, testing, and field deployment of software systems for ground robots operating in extreme field environments. Working under broad supervision, you will deliver software contributions across the platform's framework, autonomy stack, and data pipelines, supporting research and field trials across multiple application domains. You will work as part of a small, collaborative team alongside Mechatronics Engineers, Postdoctoral Research Fellows, and senior technical leads who set technical direction. The appointment is offered initially for 12 months. The programme is funded across multiple years and there is strong potential for extension subject to performance and continued funding. Your key responsibilities will be to: design, build, and test software components for ground robotic platforms in field robotics applications contribute to the core software framework, including middleware, sensor drivers, communications stack, and platform control software implement and integrate autonomy components in collaboration with research staff contribute to data pipelines for capture, transmission, and storage of field-collected research data write portable, reliable and maintainable source code in C++ and Python, targeted for ROS2 and Linux, conforming to a style guide and with unit tests support the analysis and resolution of technical issues, escalating complex matters to senior technical leads prepare, conduct and support tests of robots in the field and debug code in the field if required collaborate with Mechatronics Engineers on the software-mechatronics interface support the Project Manager in planning, risk management, field trials, and reporting occasionally travel to rural areas and/or interstate to support fieldwork The University values courage and creativity; openness and engagement; inclusion and diversity; and respect and integrity. The appointments will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching) (tenure-track) in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The anticipated start date is 1 July 2026, or a mutually agreed-upon date. Qualifications and requirements Applicants must hold a DVM (or equivalent) or a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline. The successful candidates will contribute to laboratory-based and didactic teaching in veterinary anatomy and may contribute to other teaching activities in the DVM programme as required. Experience teaching large undergraduate cohorts in a laboratory setting is expected, and candidates should provide evidence of effectiveness in this context. Expertise in the comparative anatomy of common domestic species is required. UCVM's anatomy instruction is supported by a team of technicians and a fully equipped laboratory capable of producing teaching specimens using a variety of preservation techniques including large format plastination Experience in course leadership, development and management is an asset, and experience in supervising technical staff activities and creating teaching specimens is highly desirable. Appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching) (tenure-track) requires evidence or promise of teaching effectiveness or competency in teaching and learning, an awareness of how to apply scholarly approaches to teaching and learning practices, participation in reflective practice, and professional learning activities related to teaching and learning. Engagement in the research and scholarship required to maintain currency in pedagogy is required. UCVM employs a Distributed Veterinary Teaching Hospital model.
