More about University of Essex

A message from the University of Essex

We are Essex: home to the daring and the tenacious, a place for the ambitious and the bold. We're a close-knit, supportive and welcoming community, with a powerful and pioneering global outlook.

With almost 15,000 students from more than 147 different countries making us one of the most internationally diverse universities on the planet - you'll find the world in one place here at Essex. Top 30 in the UK (Times Good University Guide 2017), we're proud to have provided excellence in research and excellence in education for over 50 years.

At Essex you're taught by world-leading academics in a supportive and research-intense environment. Our trailblazing research continues to change the world for the better and we're placed in the top 20 in the UK for research excellence (REF 2014), placing a fantastic fourth for social science, and housing the highest-rated politics department in the country since national assessments began. We're loved by our students too, who voted us Top 10 for student satisfaction for four years in a row (NSS 2016)!

Whether you study in the beautiful historic parkland of our Colchester Campus, the bustling and lively town centre of Southend-on-Sea, or in our stately home at Loughton, this is your chance to become a member of one of the happiest groups of students around. We offer a wide range of undergraduate degrees in areas such as politics, biological science, business, law, computer science and more. The flexibility of our courses gives you the power to pursue the things that matter to you. Now's your chance to join Nobel Prize-winners, award-winning directors, presidents, well-loved actors, astronauts, and over 75,000 other alumni who have gone on to shape the world and share the Essex spirit. If you're up for a challenge, love to ask difficult questions, and want to make a real difference, welcome home.

Student Life

At Essex, you’re not just a student, but a member of a global community. We’ll help you grow, and give you the confidence and skills to challenge convention and shape what goes on around you. Our students love us so much, they voted us Top 10 for student satisfaction for four years in a row (English mainstream universities, NSS 2016)!

Our Colchester Campus is home to a number of bars, and our night club, Sub Zero, which has won Best Student Venue in the UK. Our full calendar of events each term range from current music acts to themed nights to buffets. Recent guests include DJ Fresh, Jonas Blue, Tom Zanetti, and Jaguar Skills, as well as club nights by the Ministry of Sound, Club MTV, and Pure.

Set in 200 acres of beautiful parkland on the outskirts of Colchester, Britain’s oldest recorded town, Colchester Campus is built around five compact and bustling squares, which encourages our academics and students from different departments to work together, nurturing the interdisciplinary nature of our teaching and research.

Transport links to Colchester are excellent - with access to London and the East of England via the A12 or train (hop on a direct train to London Liverpool Street and you’ll arrive in under an hour!). Plus, with Stansted Airport and the international port of Harwich nearby, travelling abroad is easy too.

Societies

University shouldn’t just be about studying, and here, we like to work hard and play hard. Alongside your academic studies, you’ll have the chance to get involved in activities to improve your CV, your student experience, and the world around you! These range from over 150 active sports clubs and societies, arts and music events, and volunteering projects. There’s truly something for everyone.

Non Financial Student Support

We’re proud to have been awarded the 2013 Times Higher Education Award for Outstanding Support for Students, for our unique placement scheme, Frontrunners, which provides paid, on-campus employment for students looking to develop the higher-level skills needed for the best jobs.

We all need a bit of support and guidance from time to time. That’s where our friendly Student Support staff can help. They offer free, confidential advice and information on all kinds of welfare issues. Whether you’re worried about money, need guidance on immigration, or are struggling with your studies, our Student Services Hub are always on hand to help during your time with us.

Our students care about each other and also run Nightline - an anonymous and confidential listening service run by students, for students.

Study Abroad

You have the opportunity to spend your third year studying abroad and you won’t pay tuition fees during this time. You can study abroad with one of our exchange partners in the United States, Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America, the Middle East, Hong Kong and Japan.
