Founded in 1583, the University of Edinburgh (UoE) is the sixth oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Britain and Ireland’s seven ancient universities.

It is made up of three colleges: arts, humanities and social sciences; science and engineering and medicine and veterinary medicine. Within these three colleges, there are 20 academic schools.

In total, the university attracts around 35,000 students, the majority of which study within the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Science, the largest of its colleges.

Its College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine is reputed to be a world-leader in its field.

UoE is an internationally-focussed university and welcomes students from all corners of the globe, with the majority coming from China and the United States.

Its students can also take advantage of the Go Abroad Fund, which provides grants for 250 or students to have a short-term international experience each year. Additionally, students are also encouraged to either study or work abroad as part of their course.

The university receives over £200 million in research income. It spends over £26 million on prizes, scholarships, studentships and bursaries. At around £317 million, it has the third largest endowment of any UK university after Oxford and Cambridge.

A total of 20 Nobel laureates are affiliated with the University of Edinburgh. These include winners of Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Peace, Literature and the Memorial Prize in Economic Science.

Alumni include Charles Darwin, David Hume, Alexander Graham Bell and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, among many others.

Situated in the heart of the historic capital of Scotland, the city of Edinburgh is home to the Scottish Parliament, an ancient volcanic rock and an iconic castle.

The School of Physics and Astronomy is seeking a Senior Teaching Laboratory Technician with the knowledge, practical skill and management ability to support the delivery of a high-quality student experience in our teaching laboratories. The successful candidate will be able to provide effective and efficient technical support in Physics & Astronomy undergraduate teaching laboratories through the design, set-up, maintenance, testing and demonstration of laboratory experiments. The role involves specialist support and managing the running of the laboratories, maintaining and updating experiments as required. This also includes demonstrating to students and staff, and good understanding of physics and experimental method is advantageous. Working independently or with minimum levels of direct supervision is important, as is being able to ask for help when it’s needed. Good communication skills and team work are essential. Hands on working, guiding students to reach their potential will be at the heart of what you do. During the teaching term, you will ensure the experiments are running smoothly and help the students understand how to get the most out of them. Term breaks are a great time to get “stuck in”, take model data, design and improve experiments or the lab environment following your passion and interests to further improve the learning experience of our students. Dean of Research The Dean of Research is a new senior leadership position within the Sharjah Education Academy. The purpose of the position is to provide leadership to shape and guide SEA’s research strategy. The Dean of Research will ensure that the Academy’s research is rigorous, socially relevant, and regionally transformative. The role is one of three Dean positions (Dean of Research, Dean of Education, Dean of Continuous Professional Learning) reporting to the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) and will work collaboratively with other senior administrators and academic leaders to develop and implement the Academy’s research strategy and plan, build research capability across the institution and establish a strong, distinctive doctoral program. The incumbent will be an established and dynamic academic leader with a distinguished track record in research leadership in an education-related field. The Dean of Research will play a pivotal role in driving SEA’s impact on education transformation nationally and within the GCC region. Experience in the UAE/GCC region and bilingual proficiency (Arabic and English) will be highly regarded. Key Responsibilities include: Research strategy and leadership: Develop and execute the Academy's research strategy, promote a strong research culture, and increase research activity and performance in the Academy’s core area of focus. Research quality: Develop, monitor and evaluate research quality across the Academy. Capability building: Lead the development and implementation of research capability and doctoral supervision programs aligned to international good practice. Funding and resource management: Secure local and international research funding and partnerships to drive the Academy’s Strategic vision and plan, manage research budgets, and oversee grant submissions and research project proposals. Postgraduate research: Oversee higher degree by research (HDR) programs, coordinate admissions, and support research capability building programs for staff and students. Collaboration and partnerships: Facilitate cross-institutional collaboration, and build relationships with industry, government, and other external stakeholders to enhance research impact. Institutional effectiveness: Coordinate with other Academy leaders to align research initiatives with institutional planning and to measure and report on research outcomes. Representation and advocacy: Represent the Academy on research-related committees and at national and international forums.  Required qualifications and skills: Academic credentials: A PhD in a relevant field to the Academy’s work  and a strong research track record, ideally in quantitative/mixed method education related research. Strategic thinking: The ability to develop and implement strategic plans aligned with institutional priorities. Leadership: Proven ability to lead teams and provide strategic direction. Communication: High-level interpersonal, communication, negotiation, and advocacy skills and experience leading initiatives with diverse stakeholders. Management: Experience in budget management and resource allocation. Preferred skills and expertise: Languages: Bilingual (Arabic/English) Local knowledge: Relevant experience in the UAE/GCC region. The role will be a part of the , which was established in 1964 initially as a Department of Social Theory and Institutions.The Department delivers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Sociology, Criminology and Social Work and supports the delivery of a faculty research methods programme as part of the collaborative NINEDTP. The Department's research strategy is built around five themes:1) Communities and Social Justice; 2) Health and Social Theory; 3) Higher Education and Social Inequality; 4) Violence and Abuse; and 5) Criminal Justice, Social Harm and Inequalities. The post holder will also be a key member of the , a university-wide research institute focused encouraging and supporting high calibre interdisciplinary research to understand and address human health challenges. The Role The post holder will affiliate with one of the ARC research themes, establish inclusive communities of practice, and lead programmes of research across the North East and North Cumbria and nationally, in line with the strategic aims of the theme. We are also looking for candidates who wish to express an interest in leading research aligned to Research Inclusion. As a training institution, the Academy is committed to delivering high-quality education and training in social work, social policy and counselling and in related disciplines at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The prospective scholars are encouraged to participate and contribute by means of research, training and consultation to the professional community in Hong Kong. The appointee is expected to conduct cutting-edge academic research, contribute to academic programme development and assume high-level service and administrative responsibilities. We are looking for outstanding candidates who can complement or add to our existing strengths in social gerontology, healthy aging, life course, mental health; application of innovative approaches in practice; smart society and wellbeing; and macro practice. Candidates who have expertise in one or more of the above areas are encouraged to apply to contribute to the advancement of the Academy/Faculty. Applicants should possess a relevant doctoral degree, a proven track record of impactful research and tertiary teaching experience.
