The University of California, Santa Barbara, often abbreviated as UCSB, is a prestigious research institute in the United States, which specialises in liberal arts. As a Public Ivy university, UCSB is well regarded among US universities.

The roots of UCSB begin with the establishment of the Anna Blake School in 1891. The institution, which firstly taught economics, saw forty years of development and expansion before becoming part of the ten colleges united under the University of California public university system.

The university, which offers over 200 degrees at all levels, is formed of three separate colleges: the College of Letters and Science, which trains professionals in humanities, fine arts, mathematics and social sciences; the College of Engineering, which focuses its interdisciplinary research on biomolecular and computation science and engineering; and the College of Creative Studies, a place which stimulates the creation of original work in Music and Literature. UCSB is also home to two professional departments: Bren School of Environmental Science & Management and the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education.

Situated in close proximity to the city of Santa Barbara, UCSB’s premises cover over 4 km² of land between California’s Pacific coastline and the Santa Ynez Mountains. UCSB is one of the few American universities that has its own beach; a lagoon and specially designed walking and bicycle paths, which encourage and enable students to stay active, even during in busy exam periods. 

University campus has an active social life. The most famous event on campus is the Extravaganza free music festival, which gathers around 8,000 visitors every spring. The campus also hosts numerous student centres, which run: a local daily and weekly newspaper; radio station; and also campus events raising awareness among students about politics and diversity challenges. 

Famous alumni of UCSB include the actor Michael Douglas, and Nobel Laureate Carol Greider.

The Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Brain Sciences (IAIBS), currently operating as the Institute of Collaborative Innovation and scheduled for formal establishment in August 2026, invites applications for the position of Full/Associate/Assistant Professor in Human Computer Interaction. IAIBS aims to become an internationally leading interdisciplinary research institute by advancing deep integration and innovation of artificial intelligence and brain sciences. It aspires to establish itself as a key hub for AI and brain science in the Greater Bay Area and globally. IAIBS consists of four research platforms: neuroimaging (3T MAGNETOM Prisma fMRI/fNIRS/EEG/MEG) core lab, brain intervention (TMS/tDCS/laser or ultrasound modulation) core lab, behavior data collection core lab and high performance computing core lab. It is expected that high-profile research work will be carried out through these platforms to produce a number of key scientific outputs and discoveries with world influence. Qualifications Prospective applicants should specialize in human computer interaction, cognitive neuroscience, emotional AI, or the interface of brain sciences and AI in general, and should possess a PhD and/or MD-PhD with extensive experiences in related fields. Preference will be given to candidates with advanced expertise and in-depth knowledge of neuroimaging and brain intervention. The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in 2026. Remuneration A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP1,250,200 (approximately USD154,350) for the position of Full Professor, MOP1,052,800 (approximately USD129,980) for the position of Associate Professor and MOP855,400 (approximately USD105,600) for the position of Assistant Professor will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The Research Engineer (Modelling and Simulation) will support a one-year applied research project and evaluate a mobile DC microgrid for military tactical applications. The role involves developing detailed power system models in ETAP and MATLAB/Simulink, conducting performance and reliability simulations, and analysing the behaviour of solar PV, BESS, diesel generators, and DC distribution systems. The engineer will also document modelling assumptions, prepare technical reports, support procurement and project operations, and assist in supervising student researchers. This position is ideal for candidates with strong grounding in power system modelling, microgrid technologies, and simulation-based research. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with the PI, Co-PI, and team to design a robust mobile DC microgrid for military operations. Develop detailed simulation models simulation models in ETAP and MATLAB/Simulink for solar PV arrays, battery energy storage systems (BESS), vehicle-based deployable storage, diesel generator sets and rectifiers, DC distribution bus and electrical loads. Implement and carry out simulation studies to analyse system performance under various operating conditions such as extreme weather, load variation, equipment failure and deployment constraints. Perform load flow, transient stability, reliability, and efficiency studies to evaluate microgrid architecture options. Support the integration of various generation assets into a cohesive DC microgrid model. Document modelling assumptions, system parameters, simulation results, and engineering insights for final reporting. Prepare simulation diagrams, charts, and technical specifications for submission. Assist with procurement of software licences and technical equipment. Conduct Risk Assessments and ensure compliance with WSH regulations. Support supervision of capstone project students involved in the project. Work independently and collaboratively to maintain research software and project tools. To communicate and liaise with any internal and external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any other ad-hoc duties assigned. Job Requirements Bachelor’s degree or above in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a related field from a recognised university. Knowledge and experience in modelling and simulation of microgrids or power systems using ETAP and/or MATLAB/Simulink. Experience in distributed energy resources (DERs), PV, BESS, diesel gensets, or DC microgrids is highly advantageous. Familiarity with energy management systems, microgrid control strategies, or predictive/dynamic control will be an advantage. Experience in conducting simulation studies, analysing results, and preparing technical reports. Commitment to supervising student projects and supporting hands-on training activities. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills. Excellent technical writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
