Despite being founded more than 550 years ago, the University of Freiburg is only the fifth oldest university in Germany.

Nonetheless, its long history teaching across sciences and humanities subjects has earned its reputation as one of Germany’s elite universities worldwide.

The student population includes 120 different nationalities, with international students making up around 16 per cent of the total number of students.

Many famous intellectuals, scientists and cultural figures attended or taught at the university, including physicist Martin Heidegger, philosophers Hannah Arendt and Rudolf Carnap and biologist Paul Uhlenhurth.

Nineteen Nobel Prize winners are associated with the university, and many of the university’s academics have been awarded with highest German research prize for work done while at the university.

The university offers 180 undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programmes across 11 faculties. There is a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary and innovative studies, with the option to add an interdisciplinary year to a bachelor’s degree.

University buildings are integrated within the city of Freiburg, on three large campuses next to the historical city centre. Some university buildings display historic architecture, like the old university library.

A new university library was erected in the 1970s and is one of the largest in the country.

In 2010, around 15 per cent of applicants were offered a place at the university – roughly 4,000 students.

Tuition is free for both EU and non-EU students, but there is a small administrative fee each year, around 200 euros.

Student dormitories are extremely popular as they offer more affordable options than renting privately. They are run both by the university and other institutions with specific focuses.

The Department of Ancient History, Papyrology, and Epigraphy at the University of Vienna is a leading international centre for the scientific study of the cultures, societies, and political organisations of the ancient Mediterranean region. Our focus ranges from the period from the Late Bronze Age and the emergence of writing systems to the transition from Late Antiquity to the Early Middle Ages. Geographically, we focus on the civilizations and cultures of the Apennine Peninsula (Rome, Etruria and the Italic peoples), the regions along the Danube and the Balkans, Asia Minor and Greco-Roman Egypt. We place particular emphasis on the connections and interactions of these cultures as well as on the analysis of written documents. Your workplace: The Senior Lecturer position is assigned to the Department of Ancient History, Papyrology, and Epigraphy, whose focus in research and teaching extends over the entire history of Greco-Roman antiquity and the culture of writing as well as its mediation media. Their field of activity is primarily in basic scientific teaching in the introductory and orientation phase StEOP of the Bachelor's degree program and in the basic phase of the Master's degree program in Ancient History and Classical Studies. In addition, you will be assigned to teach courses on Greco-Roman source studies and Latin epigraphy, preferably with a focus on digital edition studies. The employment of 22.8 hours/week includes a teaching obligation of an average of 8 hours per week of academic teaching per semester. Your future tasks: You will independently lead courses in the Bachelor's and Master's programmes amounting to an average of 8 semester hours per week. You will make an active contribution to the (further) development of course and examination formats. The ongoing reception of the current state of science as well as didactic training and the assumption of research tasks during the lecture-free period are expected. In addition, the assumption of administrative tasks, especially in the administration of teaching, is part of the portfolio. Industrial AI Algorithm and Autonomous Decision-Making Systems RESPONSIBILITIES Research and develop autonomous decision-making algorithms for process industries (e.g., chemical, pharmaceutical, materials, energy) or discrete manufacturing (e.g., electronics assembly, automotive, home appliances). Industrial Digital Twin and Intelligent Control Systems RESPONSIBILITIES Develop industrial process digital twin models based on the fusion of mechanistic and data-driven approaches. Develop predictive maintenance and fault diagnosis algorithms for critical equipment (e.g., compressors, reaction kettles). Research advanced process control strategies and deploy them on the center's distributed control systems and edge computing devices. Work closely with industry partners to validate and optimize the developed technologies in real industrial environments. Publish high-quality academic papers and participate in writing research grant proposals. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCES A Ph.D. (obtained or soon to be obtained) in Control Science and Engineering, Process Control, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. In-depth research experience and solid expertise in one or more of the following areas: Advanced Process Control and Optimization Digital Twin and Modeling & Simulation Predictive Maintenance and Fault Diagnosis Industrial IoT and Edge Computing Good programming skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB, C++) and experience with system simulation. Experience with industrial field projects or familiarity with DCS/MES systems is preferred. Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
