OUR HERITAGE

Renowned as China's cradle for the national electronic industry, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) is situated in Chengdu, the hometown of Giant Panda. The city is crowned as "Land of Abundance" with a history of over 3000 years.

UESTC was founded by the merging of the electrical engineering departments of 3 top engineering universities in China, under the direction of Premier Zhou Enlai in 1956. It became one of the nation's key universities in 1960. It was selected as one of the first "Project 211" (top 100) universities in 1997 and as one of the nation's "Project 985" (top 39) universities in 2001. In 2017, the University was selected as one of "Double First-Class" universities (Top 36 in China).

 

RESEARCH-INTENSIVE UNIVERSITY

The past sixty-four years has have witnessed the University's progress from its sole focus on the discipline of electronic engineering to one with comprehensive programs in all disciplines in electronics and information studies. At the same time, the University has also evolved into a key multidisciplinary university with electronic science and technology as its nucleus, and engineering as its major emphasis. Its ability to harmoniously integrate the studies of science, engineering, management, medicine and liberal arts, predisposes it to emerge as a top-tier research-intensive university.

In the new century, electronic information science and technology rapidly drive new high-tech developments, bringing about new opportunities and challenges. The University holds on its notion of "to seek facts and truth, to be noble and ambitious" in the pursuit of excellence and embarks on the journey to a more glorious future.

According to the latest Global Ranking by Essential Science Indicators (ESI), 9 of our disciplines are ranked among the top 1%, namely, Engineering, Computer Science, Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Neuroscience & Behaviour, Biology & Biochemistry, Clinical Medicine, with the first two being ranked amongst the top 1‰.

 

INTERNATIONAL APPROACHES

Actively promoting internationalization, the University has established ties with more than 200 universities, scientific research institutions and enterprises in some 70 countries and regions.

We value student exchange and believe it’s critical for our students to have global exposure and gain international experience. Over 30% of our students have overseas study experience in as many as 50 countries and regions. At present, there are more than 1000 long-term international students from over 70 countries and regions. In addition, we have been actively implementing the “First-Class Partnership Initiative” to nurture international elites through joint master’s and PhD programs with prestigious universities such as University of Glasgow in UK, McGill University in Canada, etc.

At the same time, we attach great importance to the training and development of our faculty. We have established faculty training centres with the College of William & Mary in USA and University of Glasgow in UK. Besides, we also have long-term cooperative relations with the world-famous universities, such as Oxford University and UCSB, etc. These international educational links, coupled with domestic ones, have enabled UESTC to have an advantageous position in talent training. 

 

LIVELY CITY

Chengdu is the capital city of Sichuan Province and the economic, transportation and communication hub in western China.

Chengdu boasts many world-renowned name cards. There's a relaxing teahouse culture – favourite local institutions have been serving the same brews for generations; a lively nightlife that mixes craft beer bars and clubs with Sichuan opera shows; and delicious food that is famous for its history, variety and spicy style even in cuisine-rich China, and very much a point of pride: Chengdu is, after all, UNESCO's first-ever City of Gastronomy. It has been regarded as one of the most liveable cities in China by China Daily and other media.

Job Description DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS The JC STEM Lab of Neuronal Circuit Dynamics under the leadership of Prof. Thomas Knopfel is inviting applications for several Postdoctoral positions: Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in theoretical or computational neuroscience / Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in mouse in vivo experimental neuroscience / Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in molecular experimental neuroscience (23240033) Understanding how adaptive and maladaptive behavior emerges from the operation of neuronal circuits is a central topic across different sub-disciplines within neuroscience. Our laboratory's research program capitalises on the establishment of cutting-edge optical technologies based on engineered molecular reporters that convert electrical signals of neurons into optical signals. Electrical signals captured from the brain of mice while they engage in different behaviors such as perception, learning and execution of tasks, as well as social interactions are analysed using advanced computational methods to address and derive theoretical models and predictions. For this line of research we are seeking several postdoctoral researchers to work synergistically both within the team and with our collaborating teams. The work will entail using novel neurotechnology and approaches to conduct multi-level investigations to address big questions in neuroscience. Successful candidates will be a part of a highly interdisciplinary collaborative teamworking environment that values effective communication, integrity and equality. i) Theoretical/computational neuroscientist (one post) We seek a theoretical/computational neuroscientist with a strong mathematical and computational background. Candidates with an interest in understanding the overlap and differences between natural and artificial intelligence are particularly encouraged to apply. ii) Mouse in vivo experimentalist (one post) For in vivo experimental work, we wish to recruit a skilled experimenter with strong biological background and an analytical approach to technical challenges. Previous experience with mouse in vivo experiments is necessary. Previous experience with neuronal activity optical imaging, particularly head-fixed imaging, is desirable. iii) Molecular experimentalist (one post) At the molecular level, we work on the premise that the physical substrate of mind sets (diversity of personalities) involves epigenetic modification in neuronal circuits3. To test this emerging research field and to interface work in line with the above theoretical and experimental neuroscience topics, we are seeking an individual with experience (or strong interest) in nanopore based DNA methylation analysis and previous bioinformatics training. Requirements: PhD in a STEM subject. Job Description SCHOOL OF CHINESE MEDICINE TEACHING AND RESEARCH DIVISION The School of Chinese Medicine (SCM) was established in 1999 and offers comprehensive education programmes in Chinese medicine, including both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in Chinese Medicine and Pharmacy in Chinese Medicine. The School is engaged in a wide range of research projects, provides Chinese medicine healthcare services to the community, and seeks to foster modernisation of the Chinese medicine profession. To consolidate the strengths of innovative research, the School has established eight high quality theme-based Research Centres equipped with advanced equipment and facilities. The highlighted strategic research areas in the School include (1) Precision medicine and phenomics study; (2) Translational medicine and innovative drug discovery; and (3) Authentication and testing of Chinese medicines. Associate Professor / Assistant Professor (23240130) To strengthen the research capacity, power the current research disciplinaries of SCM and keep up with the evolving global research environment of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the School is hiring a full-time faculty member at Assistant Professor level or above related to data science and/or computational chemistry. The data science expert, preferably with research experience in Chinese Medicine-related projects, will interact closely with the current faculty members on collaborative research projects to bring breakthrough efforts in the modern Chinese medicine research field. Candidates should possess a PhD degree in or related areas and relevant postdoctoral training with experience in and a strong understanding of bioinformatics, biostatistics, computational drug discovery and translational research. Preference will be given to candidates with appealing external grant records, outstanding publication and leading potential in research areas of clinical or populational studies with innovative therapeutic interventions. Overseas experience in world-class universities and good English communication skills are highly desirable. The appointee is also expected to teach subjects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, establish a vigorous research program in the areas of interest, and develop research cluster by collaborations within and outside the School. As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage research projects with the Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. Support research activities in one or more of the following areas: i. Advanced welding and automation technologies for steel fabrication and construction ii. Experimental investigation of high-strength aluminium alloy structures iii. Development and testing of lightweight and long-span earth retaining and stabilising structures iv. AI-enabled structural analysis, optimisation and design tools for high-efficiency, low-carbon composite building systems Plan and conduct experimental work, including but not limited to: i. Material and component testing ii. Structural behaviour testing of steel and aluminium members/connections iii. Fabrication trials and validation of welded structural components iv. Data acquisition, instrumentation and monitoring during laboratory testing Perform numerical modelling and simulation, such as finite element modelling, parametric studies, and calibration against test data. Analyse experimental and numerical results, and prepare technical reports, presentations and publications. Assist in the development of design methodologies, engineering recommendations, and data-driven or AI-enhanced workflows for structural applications. Coordinate procurement, laboratory set-up, testing schedules, and liaison with vendors/suppliers and industry collaborators. Communicate with relevant internal and external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables and milestones are achieved. Carry out risk assessment and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health regulations. Work independently, as well as within a multidisciplinary team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment and research facilities. Support grant reporting, project documentation, intellectual property development, and other ad hoc duties as assigned. To communicate in any relevant internal or external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any ad-hoc duties assigned by Supervisor. Job Requirements Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related discipline. Demonstrated knowledge in at least one of the following areas: Structural steel or aluminium structures Welding, fabrication, or construction automation Experimental structural testing and instrumentation Numerical modelling and simulation AI/data-driven methods for engineering applications Familiarity with engineering software such as ABAQUS, ETABS, MATLAB, Python, or equivalent will be an advantage. Prior experience in laboratory testing, data analysis, or industry-related engineering projects will be an advantage.
