The Department The Department of Physics at Durham University is one of the leading UK Physics departments with an outstanding reputation for excellence in teaching, research and employability of our students. The Role Research Assistant We invite applications for a Research Assistant position, to start in October 2026, with an initial period of 2 years and the possibility of further extension. The successful candidate will join thriving research teams within the Centre for Extragalactic Astronomy (CEA) at Durham, which is a leading group in observational astrophysics with expertise in compact objects, active galactic nuclei, galaxies and large-scale structure. The Role Postdoctoral Research Associate We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position, to start in October 2026, with an initial period of 2 years and the possibility of further extension. The post is funded by the ERC Consolidator Grant project X-MAPS and will be supervised by Dr Adam Ingram, who will be moving to Durham University in June 2026. The successful candidate will join thriving research teams within the Centre for Extragalactic Astronomy (CEA) at Durham, which is a leading group in observational astrophysics with expertise in compact objects, active galactic nuclei, galaxies and large-scale structure. The role will contribute to the goals of the X-MAPS project, which aims to unify fast X-ray timing and X-ray polarimetry techniques to improve our understanding of black hole X-ray binaries and measure black hole fundamental properties. Specific research projects include training neural networks to act as fast drop-in replacements for advanced X-ray timing and polarisation models (e.g. the X-ray reverberation mapping code RELTRANS), and applying advanced Fourier timing techniques to search for rapid spectral and polarimetric variability in the X-ray signal from black hole X-ray binaries. We are therefore searching for candidates with experience in theoretical modelling of accreting black holes and/or in observational stochastic X-ray timing and polarimetric analysis.

The post holder is responsible for overseeing representing the University and will play a major role in protecting and growing the international activities for the University. This role will focus on our UK, Australian and New Zealand markets, and we may involve you in other areas. As a key member of the International Team the post holder will have significant oversight of international marketing, recruitment and partnership functions. The post holder will possess excellent communication, negotiation, organisational skills and initiative to ensure strategic alignment that the most efficient and effective systems are in place to support achieving the international strategy. You will be experienced in higher education international student recruitment and you should be used to working to meet tight deadlines in a pressurised customer focussed environment. The Faculty of Medicine wishes to appoint an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer, hosted by one of the following clinical specialties: Public Health, Paediatrics or Ophthalmology. The post is intended for an applicant within any of these three specialities, with the speciality of the final (single) post dependent on the successful applicant. The post-holder will be pursuing their development of research and teaching within either the Primary Care, Population Science and Medical Education school, Human Development and Health school or Clinical and Experimental Sciences school of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton. In this post-doctoral role, the successful candidate will be in specialist clinical training at ST3 level or above and have substantial experience of the relevant research areas, a proven track record of high-quality original research publications, the ability to work well in a multidisciplinary, multi-professional team and hold a corresponding NTN. You will join the NIHR Clinical Integrated Academic Training Programme at the University of Southampton, as an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer. The post-holder will also have clinical commitments at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust that will lead to the acquisition of clinical skills required for full registration within the specialty.
