The University of Lancashire (Uclan) was founded in 1828 as the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge.
Based in Preston, Lancashire, Uclan is one of the UK’s largest universities offering 400 undergraduate and over 200 postgraduate courses across 20 academic schools.
Uclan’s main campus is a ten minute walk from Preston city centre, with other campuses located in Lancashire and Cumbria, and an overseas one in Cyprus which opened in 2012 – the first British university in the country to do so.
High among Uclan’s priorities are maximising employability for students, furnishing them with relevant skills and developing course content to meet the needs of business.
The university boasts strong links with employers that include British Aerospace, Rolls Royce and Cisco Systems, and it offers business incubation facilities and training for students after graduation. In the last five years alone, it has helped more than 1,000 graduates start their own businesses - the second highest figure in the UK.
In addition to its focus on practical skills, the university also scores highly for its research, with all 16 of its subject areas judged to be ‘world leading’ in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework.
The university has recently embarked on a £200 million redevelopment of its facilities, including the construction of a £30 million Engineering Innovation Centre. Other recent additions to UCLan’s student offering include the introduction of courses in fashion and forensics and, in 2015, it opened the UK’s newest medical school.
Home to a student-staff community of around 38,000, with 2,000 international students among them, Uclan has a thriving, vibrant atmosphere. Beyond the campus, Preston is a small and compact city, easy to navigate and with excellent transport links to the rest of the UK. On its doorstep is the picturesque countryside of the Ribble Valley, the Trough of Bowland and the Southern Lakes.

We are seeking a Level A or B Research Associate/ Fellow with expertise in implementation research that includes quantitative and qualitative methods, to assist in research that will evaluate a targeted strategy to support health professionals in delivering more effective, evidence-based care for knee osteoarthritis, with the aim of reducing low-value treatments and improving patient outcomes. This project focuses on improving care for people with osteoarthritis, a common and painful condition that costs the Australian healthcare system over $4 billion each year. Although the most effective treatments involve education, exercise and weight management, many patients are not offered these options and instead receive unnecessary imaging or are referred for surgery that may not benefit them. We are seeking a highly motivated academic Research Associate/Fellow (Level A or B) to lead and coordinate key elements of a complex health research trial. In this role, you will establish and manage governance and stakeholder groups while leading protocol development and contributing to data acquisition, analysis and management. The position involves engaging with a wide range of stakeholders-including GPs, physiotherapists, primary health networks, and local healthcare providers-to support trial activities. You will lead co-design workshops and implementation strategy development, oversee pilot and full trial delivery, drive process evaluation activities and supervise junior staff, including a PhD student and data analyst. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. Job Details This Research Engineer will contribute to an international joint project related to policy-making in urban planning and design, focusing on developing a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) framework and tool. The work will involve integrating results from GeoTOPSIS and/or VectorMCDA in QGIS, enhancing spatial decision support for blue–green infrastructure and ecosystem service evaluation. The Research Engineer will lead the software development and interface programming, working closely with the GIS Research Fellow and interdisciplinary project team members to create a user-friendly, scalable decision-support tool for planners and policymakers. As part of understanding the ecosystem services that are involved in Singapore, the successful candidate will also be expected to perform some field-based data collection during the duration of the project.
