Founded in 1834 by Pierre-Théodore Verhaegen, the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) is a private research university with several campuses located in the heart of the Belgian capital, giving researchers and a 24,000-strong student body every opportunity to embrace all the perks of a vibrant European city.

ULB offers about 40 undergraduate programmes and nearly 250 graduate courses. Accessible by train from several major European cities in under two hours, about one-third of ULB’s intake are international with 20 per cent coming from Europe. Although it is a francophone institution, international students can take advantage of university languages courses to improve their French and some master’s programmes are taught in English. ULB has strong links with international institutions and works closely with Vrije Universiteit Brussel, a Flemish-speaking institution also based in the capital.

The university’s founding philosophy focused on the idea of freedom of inquiry and students are represented on all decision-making bodies.

ULB’s motto can be translated as “conquering darkness with knowledge” and its scholars have won a variety of awards including four Nobel prizes, 24 Francqui Prizes, a prestigious scholarly award in the sciences in Belgium, and a Fields Medal. Well-known alumni include the English journalist Robert Peston and business school graduate Heidi Cruz, who worked for the Bush administration and is the wife of US politician Ted Cruz.

The university has 12 faculties and incorporates several museums, including one dedicated to zoology, and at the Solbosch campus, ULB’s main location, there is a weekly market selling locally produced food.

We are now looking for a professor to lead ship hydrodynamics field at Aalto University’s Marine and Arctic Technology group. In this position you will have a chance to make an impact by changing the way the field is defined in terms of research and education in the era of increasing computational resources and data, sustainability goals, and design of previously unseen ship and ship system concepts. The research within the position focuses especially on understanding, predicting, and controlling the complex, unsteady dynamic phenomena and hydrodynamic forces associated with the interactions of ships with the ocean environment. The position will contribute to hydrodynamics which equips our graduates for the future marine engineering paradigms, such as climate change and green transition. This position belongs to Aalto University’s tenure track career system and will be filled to either assistant, associate or full professor level depending on the chosen candidate (tenure track evaluation criteria). The applicants will be evaluated based on their potential and/or merits in the following dimensions: research, teaching, and impact and service. Your role and goals  Your role will be to develop and share expertise on understanding and managing ship motions and loads in real operating conditions throughout the lifecycle of a ship. This is essential for safer, more energy-efficient ships: Current design practices often rely on simplified assumptions that misrepresent the lifetime environmental loads, which affects the performance, structural safety, energy system sizing, and operability of the ship. Ideally, your research will integrate experiments, theory, and simulation in a physics-first manner, directly informing ship design and operations. We expect you to: Advance research to improve the prediction and performance of calm-water resistance, hydrodynamic loads, motions, and added resistance, using targeted experiments, full-scale operational data, and both high-fidelity and reduced-order models. Build a team and secure research in the field of hydrodynamics by acquiring relevant resources from various sources for applied and fundamental research (such as Research Council of Finland, Business Finland, Horizon Europe). Teach on marine hydrostatics and hydrodynamics in ways that connect theory with model- and full-scale experiments and numerical methods for seakeeping, wave loads, and added resistance, while embedding themes of climate adaptation, decarbonization and ship design. Teaching will also cover participation to B.Sc. and M.Sc. level courses and thesis supervision at all levels. Your experience and ambitions The candidate is expected to build a versatile team that advances fundamental understanding, theoretical and numerical approaches, and the use of applied methods in ship hydrodynamics by combining model- and full-scale data. They should be able to teach foundational and state-of-the-art approaches and help to grow the hydrodynamics ecosystem of Aalto in collaboration with industry, authorities, and international partners. Candidates must hold a D.Sc. or PhD and have a successful postdoctoral or equivalent research or industrial track record. Description The Perception and Active Cognition (PAC) Lab at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) is seeking an Emirati Junior Research Scientist for a 30-month position supporting a collaborative research project between NYUAD and the National Academy of Childhood Development (NACD), a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority. Schemes of Service: Research Division: Food, Chemical and Biotechnology Employment Type: Fixed Term As a University of Applied Learning, the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) works closely with industry partners to deliver translational, impact-driven research. This role supports applied food processing research projects with strong industry relevance, focusing on product development, process optimization and food characterization. Key Responsibilities Lead bench formulation of mushroom‑based and plant‑based food products, especially focusing on muscle‑like architectures to achieve required texture, flavour, and nutrition performance during cooking, reheating, and storage. Apply advanced texturisation techniques, including cold extrusion, lamination, and natural tenderisation strategies (e.g. enzyme treatment, solid-state fermentation), to create fibrous, meat‑like structures that replicate bite, chewiness, and elasticity. Translate scalable solutions from upstream processing (e.g. protein gels, fermented ingredients) into robust food formulations by collaboration with culinary experts, and lead pilot‑scale trials at facilities such as SIT FoodPlant to assess manufacturability, reproducibility, and scalability for clinical and consumer studies. Conduct textural, rheological, and sensory characterisation to evaluate product performance and guide formulation refinement. Consolidate formulation, processing, and performance data to support techno‑economic analysis (TEA), life‑cycle assessment (LCA), and cost–benefit analysis (CBA). Prepare scientific manuscripts, technical reports, progress updates, and final deliverables for funding agencies and stakeholders. Engage and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to support progress meetings, technology transfer activities, conferences, and approved communication channels. Supervise and mentor junior researchers, engineers, students, and visiting scholars involved in the projects. Job Requirements PhD in Food Science, Food Technology, or a closely related discipline. Strong Master’s degree holders with relevant experience may be considered. Strong background in food formulation, protein‑based systems, and texture design. Knowledge of protein gels, microgels, fat mimetics, and structure–function relationships in food matrices. Familiarity with sensory evaluation, texture analysis, and rheological measurements, food system characterization. Experience translating laboratory‑scale formulations into pilot‑scale or industry‑relevant processes. Understanding of nutrition‑driven product design, particularly for vulnerable or special‑needs populations. Ability to integrate culinary considerations into scientific formulation and product development. Strong problem‑solving skills with attention to both scientific rigor and practical feasibility. Excellent communication skills for interdisciplinary collaboration with engineers, nutritionists, clinicians, and industry partners. Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a multidisciplinary applied research team.
