The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is seeking an outstanding executive leader to take on the role of Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Science & Research). Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Deputy CEO (Science & Research) will champion a positive research culture and set the standards for research quality that is integral to enhancing AIMS’ reputation as a world-leader in marine science. They will ensure the continuous improvement and success of Australia’s marine tropical science and research initiatives, core research facilities, research ethics and integrity. They will lead prioritisation of research to inform evidence-based decision-making of allocation of resources to support scientific excellence. The successful candidate will be a distinguished research leader with a PhD or equivalent qualification and a track record of leading complex, high-performing research organisations. You will bring credibility as a respected researcher and scholar, combined with experience leading multidisciplinary teams across complex and geographically dispersed environments. As a strategic and values-led leader, you will have demonstrated success in setting organisational direction, driving research performance, enabling innovation and fostering inclusive, collaborative cultures where people and ideas can thrive. Being a collaborative member of the Executive Leadership Team, you will combine strong governance, financial and risk management capability with the ability to foster multi-, inter- and transdisciplinary research collaboration across institutions and sectors. Working under the general direction of the Deputy Director of Languages and in consultation with an academic steering committee, you will play a pivotal role in driving project timelines, managing digital resource gathering, and monitoring progress for stakeholder reporting. This dynamic position involves end-to-end logistics for both online and in-person professional development workshops, handling vital financial administration (such as budget tracking and invoicing), and managing data collection to evaluate project success. You will serve as a key point of contact, collaborating closely with internal university teams, language academics, Community Language Schools, and external sector partners to support vital consultation and community engagement activities. Our Ideal Candidate Our ideal candidate is an accomplished administrator with demonstrated experience in project coordination and program delivery within a complex organizational environment. You possess strong organizational and planning skills, an exceptional eye for detail, and the proven ability to manage competing priorities to meet deadlines. Exceptional communication skills are a must, as you will draft reports, create promotional materials, and build positive, effective relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders—from education providers and community groups to internal academic teams. You are adept at managing event logistics, tracking budgets, and maintaining precise records. High proficiency in the MS Office suite is required, and experience with online learning management systems, website maintenance, or digital resource development will make you stand out.
