Established in 1218, Salamanca University in northwest Spain is one of the oldest institutions in Europe and the country's first higher education institute.

The prestigious university, which teaches about 30,000 students, has been dubbed the ”Oxford of Spain“ and is an important centre for the study of the humanities. Salamanca University also has campuses in Ávila, Béjar and Zamora.

Salamanca University is made up of the colleges of law, liberal arts, and science and medicine, as well as other academic units, and there are more than 250 academic programmes on offer. 

The institution began teaching Spanish language and cultural courses in 1929 and attracts more than 4,000 foreign language learners each year. The year-round Spanish language programme is taught in the Escuelas Menores building where graduating students once wrote their signatures on its walls in an ink made of bull’s blood, olive oil and herbs. The university's motto roughly translates as "what nature doesn't give, Salamanca doesn't provide".

University alumni include Don Quixote author Miguel de Cervantes, Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés, and the film director Alexander Payne, who directed About Schmidt and Sideways.

Salamanca, which has a population of about 170,000 people, is about two hours' drive from Madrid. It is known as ”La Dorada“, or the Golden City, because of the ”glow“ given off by its sandstone buildings. Its Old City, home to Plaza Mayor, two cathedrals and the House of Shells, has Unesco World Heritage Centre status. In 2002, the city was named European Capital of Culture.

Description The SHORES Center at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate position in the area of Digital Twins and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Smart Infrastructure Management Systems to work under the supervision of Professor Borja García de Soto, director of the S.M.A.R.T. Construction Research Group and Co-PI in the SHORES Center. The successful candidate will also collaborate with researchers and other Investigators from the SHORES Center on project related to the advancement of multidisciplinary research supporting the digitalization of the built environment. The selected researcher will expand the current research in the area of AI- and ML-powered digital twin frameworks for civil, energy, and built-environment infrastructure. These frameworks integrate IoT-enabled sensing and real-time analytics to support continuous monitoring, data-driven evaluation, and predictive maintenance. The work also address user comfort and indoor environmental quality (IEQ) as key dimensions of infrastructure performance. This research forms part of a broader effort to design smart, adaptive, and resilient Infrastructure Management Systems that leverage digitalization, automation, and intelligent decision-making. Key Responsibilities include conduct cutting-edge research on the integration of Digital Twins with AI/ML technologies for infrastructure lifecycle management. Develop and validate computational models for monitoring and predicting infrastructure performance. Collaborate with faculty and researchers across SHORES. Disseminate research findings through high-impact publications and conference presentations. Mentor graduate and undergraduate students involved in related projects. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline with a focus on Digital Twins, AI, ML, or smart infrastructure systems. Description We are inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Associate in the Division of Social Science at NYU Abu Dhabi from individuals who have or will soon receive a PhD in sociology, social psychology, computational social science, computer science, information science, data science, or a closely related field. The appointment will begin September 1, 2026, subject to final budget approval and is available for up to three years. The post-doctoral associate will spend half their time on independent research, and half their time on collaborative research with Professors Mario D. Molina, Minsu Park, and Blaine Robbins. The collaborative research will be large-scale analyses of digital traces (e.g., Yelp, Airbnb, Stack Exchange) and virtual lab experiments to study how ingroup favoritism and group boundaries coevolve in multiplex communities; how attribute- and opinion-based cues shape insider/outsider categorization, intergroup relations, and social cohesion; and how to design interventions that promote inclusivity, fairness, and productive discourse online. We seek a candidate with expertise in the following four areas: (1) working with large-scale digital trace data; (2) building and running natural language processing and machine learning workflows; (3) experimental design and causal inference (including virtual lab experiments); and/or (4) network or computational modeling. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in applying these tools to questions of group formation, intergroup relations, and the distribution of resources on online platforms. This is an excellent position for a computational social scientist or a computer/data scientist eager to transition into the social sciences. The position does not require teaching, but it may be possible to get teaching experience for compensation.
