Clausthal University of Technology

With a history dating back to 1775, Clausthal University of Technology is one of Germany's oldest technical universities. Beginning as the Clausthal Mining School, established to train local pitmen and smelter workers, the institution developed from a specialist school for mining into the internationally recognised Clausthal Mining Academy in 1864, before becoming a full technical university in 1968. Its academic scope subsequently expanded to include mechanical engineering, process engineering, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and economics, while maintaining strong research links to mining and related industries.

The university is based in the small town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld in the Harz Mountains of Lower Saxony. It is a relatively small university, totalling approximately 3,000 students, around half of whom are international.  

Academic offerings are divided into two faculties, engineering, and economics and science, with programmes including electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, business administration, business informatics, mining engineering, and petroleum engineering.

Research is centred around four main fields: sustainable energy systems, securing raw materials and resource efficiency, sustainable materials and processes, and digitalisation for a sustainable society. 

The university operates six interdisciplinary research centres, including the Clausthal Environmental Technology Research Center (CUTEC), Clausthal Center for Materials Technology, Center for Digital Technologies, Research Center for Energy Storage Technologies, and the Simulation Science Center Clausthal-Göttingen.
