Tomsk Polytechnic University is a leading technical university in Russia. Since its foundation in 1896, TPU has always been a polytechnic institution with a wide range of research and higher education.

Today we are a National Research university which places special emphasis on advanced engineering education, creation of resource-efficient technologies, internationalization and integration of research and academic activities.


We grow by enhancing scientific research. TPU research activities are focused on issues of resource efficiency related to interdisciplinary clusters: Safe Environment, Sustainable Energy, Medical Engineering and the Planet Resources. We carry out mega-projects that can qualitatively impact each individual and the planet. We are developing a new generation of industrial tomography, radiopharmaceuticals for early and accurate cancer diagnosis, heavy-duty materials for extreme conditions, and more. We encourage students by involving them in research projects and scientific conferences to introduce them to the world of science.


Undergraduate and postgraduate studies are delivered both in Russian and English languages. Bachelor’s degree courses in English are available in: Computer Science and Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Electric Power Engineering and Electrical Engineering, Management. Master’s degree courses in English are open in: Material Science, Instrument Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Nanoelectronics, Computer Science.

Degree courses taught in English are organized in small groups. All students take advantages of well-equipped laboratories with comprehensive tools and devices for each individual. For those who choose studying in Russian, a Pre-University course was designed to develop Russian language proficiency and upgrade academic knowledge in STEM-disciplines.

TPU students actively participate in academic exchange programmes with overseas partner universities in Europe, Asia and Americas.

Healthy lifestyle

For many years TPU has been recognized as a healthy lifestyle institution; a lot of students and faculty participate in sports, a few students are athletes and multiple champions of Russia, Europe and the world. Diverse sports facilities include a stadium for track-and-field athletics, soccer playgrounds, gyms and halls for indoor sports. A new University’s pool is expected to open in December 2015.


TPU campus is an integrally part of the city center. Each TPU student is provided with a place in dormitories during the whole period of study. Located not far from academic buildings the dormitories are equipped with all necessaries for comfortable living and self-preparation.


Annually industrial partners come and hold career days for our undergraduates and graduates. Students get in touch with employers to learn placement opportunities and peculiarities of future jobs. Our alumni take top positions at Rosatom, Schlumberger, Gazprom, Roscosmos.
