About Tohoku University

Basic information and contact details for Tohoku University

For more than a century, Tohoku University has been consistently ranked amongst the top academic institutions in Japan. Its research achievements and contributions, coupled with its wide network of collaborative partners, led to it being one of the first institutions to be conferred the status of a Designated National University by the Japanese government in June 2017.

A trailblazer since its founding in 1907, the university was also the first to accept both women and graduates from technical schools, departing from the norms of other imperial universities at the turn of the 20th century.

Since then, Tohoku University has continued to attract talented researchers who have put their findings towards improving quality of life around the world. Among the inventions that were born at Tohoku University are the split-anode magnetron used in microwave ovens, the steel-wire recorder and the Yagi-Uda antenna.

More recently, in the aftermath of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, Tohoku University pioneered research in next-generation medicine and disaster science, giving local and global communities the necessary tools and knowledge to fight illnesses and be better prepared for natural disasters.

Tohoku University’s four main campuses are spread across the cosmopolitan city of Sendai, the cultural, political and economic centre of Japan’s north east (Tohoku) region. Located some 300 kilometers - and a short 90-minute bullet train ride – from Tokyo, Sendai is a city of fascinating contradictions.

University House Aobayama is Tohoku University's 9th student dormitory and also its most ambitious and multicultural. Located at the new extension of Aobayama Campus, the new complex features 94 units of eight bedrooms each - enough for 752 students. There are also four rooms for residents with disabilities.

We are looking for an outstanding doctoral student to join the Optics and Photonics group for theoretical and experimental research on nanoscale control of optical fields for applications in optical imaging and photonic chip technology. The research will be focused on the design, fabrication, and testing of optical components with novel functionalities based on nanoscale manipulation of light and its propagation medium. Potential applications of these components range from super-resolution optical microscopes and telescopes to on-chip photonic processors. The appointment is for 4 years with a flexible start in autumn 2026. The research involves collaboration with scientists from the University of Eastern Finland and Tampere University, as well as researcher groups from Germany, Switzerland, and Spain. Your role and goals In this position, you will act as a doctoral researcher working on design and testing of novel nanofabricated optical components. The design will be done using advanced numerical calculation methods, such as Finite Element Method (FEM) and Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method. Approaches based on inverse engineering and machine learning will also be considered. The samples will be fabricated using the clean room facilities of Aalto University and tested using the equipment of the Optics and Photonics group. We expect you to be able to generate good scientific ideas, propose new technological solutions, initiate and maintain scientific collaboration, write scientific articles and research proposals, and participate in teaching. We expect you to graduate as a Doctor of Science in four years. Your experience We expect the candidate to hold a MSc degree in physics and be familiar with standard numerical calculation techniques used in physics. As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver on an industry innovation research project where you will be part of the research team to lead the storm surge modelling in the Singapore Sea. As a specialist in wave modelling software, the successful candidate will work on cutting-edge projects related to coastal and ocean wave modelling using Delt3D software. The role of the researcher is to perform physics-based modeling to build a numerical model that can predict storm surges in Singapore coastlines based on different weather conditions. The researcher will also work with team members within the consortium in generating necessary data required for developing a machine learning model for storm surge prediction. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. Undertake these responsibilities in the project: Delft3D and SWAN Modelling: Utilize Delft3D and SWAN software to develop and validate numerical models for wave propagation, storm surge modelling, and coastal dynamics. Building up of a database of sea level anomaly with extreme weather conditions: Utilize the developed numerical model to build a database of sea level anomaly with different weather conditions, which can be used to develop a data-driven model for storm surge prediction. Data Analysis: Process and analyze climate, ocean wave and coastal data to improve model accuracy. Research: Conduct research to enhance wave modelling techniques and contribute to the advancement of coastal engineering and oceanography. Impact Assessment: Evaluating the potential impacts of storm surges on coastal regions, including flood risk assessments and vulnerability analyses. Collaboration: Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including hydrodynamic researchers, coastal engineers, and oceanographers. Reporting: Prepare research findings for publication in scientific journals and present results at conferences. Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations. Coordinate procurement and liaison with vendors/suppliers. Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Assists in co-supervision of Final Year Projects (FYP) or capstone projects students together with the project PI. The employee is to communicate with any relevant internal or external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any adhoc duties assigned. Requirements PhD or Master degree in a related field with a focus on coastal engineering, oceanography, or hydrodynamics. Proficiency in wave modeling software, particularly Delft3D and SWAN. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Research experience in coastal and ocean waves is preferred.
