Research Fellow in the Institute of Sound & Vibration Research
University of Southampton
United Kingdom, Southampton
University of Southampton
United Kingdom, Southampton
Apply by uploading your CV and a cover letter detailing how your skills and experience match the requirements of the role. We are seeking an enthusiastic Researcher Fellow to join an exciting interdisciplinary project developing a new generation of compact acoustic liners for ducted flow systems, with potential applications in aerospace, turbomachinery, ventilation and other flow-duct noise control technologies. Noise from ducted flow systems remains a major engineering and health challenge, particularly where space and weight constraints limit the use of conventional acoustic treatments. This project, funded by the UK Metamaterials Network, will explore a novel aeroacoustic metamaterial liner concept that combines thin, lightweight acoustic metamaterials with shallow cavity liners to achieve strong low-frequency sound absorption at exceptionally small depth-to-wavelength ratios. The successful candidate will work within a collaborative team at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, University of Southampton, drawing on expertise in aeroacoustics, acoustic liners, metamaterials, numerical modelling and experimental testing. The project includes opportunities to engage with internationally recognised facilities, including the University’s Planar Flow Rig, and to interact with industrial collaborators. The role will involve developing analytical and numerical models of metamaterial liner designs, carrying out parametric studies and optimisation, supporting prototype manufacture, conducting impedance tube measurements, and contributing to aeroacoustic testing under grazing flow conditions. The project will combine modelling, design, manufacturing and experiments, offering an excellent opportunity for a researcher who enjoys hands-on, applied and creative engineering science. Applicants should have, or be close to completing, a PhD in acoustical engineering. Experience in modelling, measuring, and optimising thin, plate-like acoustic metamaterials is required, given the short timeline of this pump prime funds project. We welcome applications from candidates with diverse technical backgrounds who are motivated to learn and contribute to a high-impact research challenge. The post offers the opportunity to produce prototype devices, generate novel experimental data, contribute to conference and journal publications, and help shape a follow-on research programme. Funding is available for dissemination at UK and international conferences. Apply by uploading your CV and a cover letter detailing how your skills and experience match the requirements of the role.
