The Finnish Museum of Natural History (LUOMUS) at the University of Helsinki invites applications for a Postdoctoral researcher in insect morphology and evolution for a fixed-term period of two years. The work will be based at the Finnish Museum of Natural History (Luomus), Helsinki, Finland. The postdoctoral researcher will join the PhenoBees project, funded by the Research Council of Finland, and work under the supervision of Diego S. Porto, an Academy Research Fellow. The successful candidate is expected to start by September 2026. ABOUT THE POSITION The main goal of the PhenoBees project is to develop a semantic data workflow to integrate comparative information from different phylogenetic datasets (for more details, see: PhenoBees page) and address hypotheses about the evolution of the mouthparts of bees (Hymenoptera: Apoidea). As part of the main project, the work of the postdoctoral researcher will be focused on generating, processing, and analysing comparative morphological data on bee mouthparts. The ultimate goal of the postdoctoral research is to understand the drivers and dynamics underlying the evolution of the mouthparts in bees. The postdoctoral researcher will be primarily responsible for: Data collection: Dissecting and preparing material of bee mouthparts and measuring anatomical structures; Data analysis: Analysing comparative data (discrete and continuous traits) to test alternative hypotheses of modularity/integration of mouthpart structures in bees; Morphological study: Performing comparative anatomical study of a representative of a long-tongued bee and a short-tongued bee; Dissemination: Contributing in manuscript writing and attending conferences QUALIFICATIONS The position requires: A doctoral degree relevant to the project (e.g., biology, entomology, evolutionary biology) Experience working with comparative anatomy of insects, preferentially Hymenoptera The ability to conduct independent scholarly work Teaching skills necessary for the position Excellent collaboration and communication skills Excellent written and spoken English skills Clear motivation and commitment to perform the research Highly valued qualifications: Experience working with bee morphology Experience working with CT-Scan data or willingness to learn the necessary skills to work with it Knowledge of morphometrics and/or phylogenetic comparative methods in general WHY WORKING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKI? This position will focus on understanding the ecological roles and potential applications of these microorganisms in agricultural systems, specifically for improving soil health, nutrient cycling, and sustainability. The successful candidate will conduct cutting-edge research on how microalgae and cyanobacteria can enhance soil fertility, optimize nutrient availability, and contribute to more sustainable agricultural practices. Job Responsibilities Study the biology, ecology, and physiology of microalgae and cyanobacteria, particularly their role in soil nutrient cycling, nitrogen fixation, and carbon sequestration. Investigate the mechanisms through which these microorganisms interact with soil environments and plants, particularly in relation to enhancing soil fertility, water retention, and microbial diversity. Develop and optimize biofertilizers or biostimulants based on cyanobacteria and microalgae to improve soil health and agricultural productivity. Study the effects of these microorganisms on crop growth, soil nutrient availability, and plant-microbe interactions. Design and execute laboratory, greenhouse, and field experiments to assess the efficacy of microalgae and cyanobacteria in improving soil quality and plant performance. Analyze experimental data using appropriate statistical methods and communicate findings through scientific publications. Work closely with researchers from other disciplines, such as microbiology, soil science, and agriculture, to integrate findings into broader agricultural and environmental research efforts. Present research findings at conferences and collaborate with industry partners or stakeholders on practical applications of research. Mentor graduate students, interns, or research assistants involved in related projects. Qualifications: Ph.D. in Microbiology, Environmental Biology, Soil Science, or a related field. Strong background in microbial ecology, particularly with experience in cyanobacteria or microalgae biology. Experience with experimental design and data analysis in both laboratory and field settings. Familiarity with agricultural microbiology, plant-microbe interactions, or biofertilizer development is highly desirable. Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a strong record of scientific publications. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team. Description NYUAD Experimental High Energy Physics group is searching for a post-doctoral associate to join the planned group's efforts to be involved in the ATLAS experiment as part of the UAE-ATLAS cluster, composed of three UAE institutions. Candidates must demonstrate experience in experimental high energy physics. The group will be contributing to the Physics Modeling (MC software, MC validation and Pileup modeling), the MET High-Level Trigger validation, optimization and performance studies, and to the heterogeneous computing where the focus will be to work on to the current efforts on accelerator developments towards the HL-LHC. Expertise in trigger development, performance and optimization and/or the ATLAS computing model is preferred. The selected candidate will work in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The appointment will be for two years, with the possibility for renewal, subject to mutual agreement. The successful candidate is expected to take a leading role in the development of the group tasks and help in supervising PhD students.
