Responsibilities and Duties We are looking for future colleagues in all fields of computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing, biocomputation, numeral networks, generative artificial intelligence, or mathematical modelling who can: Conduct high-quality research, evidenced by publications in world-leading journals, and attract industry and government research funding by offering significant research impact. Deliver high-quality teaching to undergraduate and graduate students, as evidenced, for example, by peers, students and external examiners. Work collaboratively across the campus and the wider university to ensure an inclusive, enriching and enabling entrepreneurial learning experience. Work collaboratively with the Dean of School in designing and implementing the School’s Research, Enterprise, and Industrial Development strategies. Work with relevant colleagues and departments to identify opportunities for successfully exploration research opportunities. Create and support a healthy industry-enhanced research environment, with agreed annual research outcomes and expectations, emphasizing impact and industry-funded quality research and innovation. Identify and implement strategies to maximise grant capture and research income from external funding bodies and business/industry. Supervise PhD students and mentor Early Career Researchers in PhD supervision. Contribute to the development of the School by providing expertise and performing horizon scanning for the development of new opportunities at home and abroad. Generate and manage major research grant applications to support innovative industry-focused cross-disciplinary research and become an ambassador for the School to promote interdisciplinary research and teaching activities. Essential Qualifications/Experience Successful applicants to the position of Professor are expected to have: A PhD in artificial intelligence, data science, computer science, or other relevant disciplines from a world-renowned university. Ideally, hold a PgCert HE or equivalent. Outstanding research leadership and management experience and the ability to motivate and inspire teams with good people skills. A national/international reputation with demonstrable impact in any research and innovation fields relevant to the School. Evidence of successful research partnerships with academic institutions and external organisations. Evidence of good, sustained, and successful leadership of research grants and consultancy contracts and conducting high-quality research, evidenced by clear impact of output and publications in leading journals. Demonstrable experience in cooperating with industrial partners to develop R&D projects. A rich experience in teaching, research, academic leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship, strategic planning and financial management in a university and business environment. First-class networking skills and an ability to build and nurture external contacts and partnerships, working with businesses and other organisations in the area of innovation and business support to benefit the School. The Ecological Synthesis Group (ESG), led by University Researcher Dr. Caio Graco-Roza, invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher (PhD student) to join the research group at the Lammi Biological Station, University of Helsinki, Finland. The position will start at the earliest in March 2026, or as agreed. The doctoral researcher will be offered a full-time fixed-term contract for three years. A trial period of six months will apply. Position description Biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation are increasingly shaped by interactions across ecosystem boundaries, yet the mechanisms linking terrestrial and aquatic communities remain poorly understood. This doctoral position is part of the TRACE – Trait Responses Across Connected Ecosystems project (2025–2028), funded by the Research Council of Finland. The TRACE project has a broad focus on understanding connectivity between forest and lake ecosystems using functional traits, with particular emphasis on trait dimensions related to tolerance, movement, and interaction. By integrating multi-taxa field data, trait-based ecology, experiments, and advanced statistical analyses, TRACE aims to uncover how ecological processes propagate across blue–green boundaries and shape biodiversity patterns at local to regional scales. The doctoral researcher is expected to actively contribute to field campaigns, experiments, shared data collection, data analysis, and manuscript preparation, and to work as an integrated member of a collaborative research team. Within this general project framework, the PhD project offers some flexibility to jointly define the specific research focus according to the candidate’s scientific interests, provided that the topic remains fully embedded within the objectives and work packages of the TRACE project. Research will be conducted primarily at the Lammi Biological Station, the largest university research station in Finland, located approximately 100 km from the University of Helsinki main campus. The station provides exceptional access to long-term study lakes, well-equipped laboratories, experimental infrastructure, and a vibrant international research community, offering a highly collaborative and scientifically stimulating working environment. Main tasks and responsibilities The doctoral researcher will: Participate in and contribute to field campaigns and experiments in forest–lake systems Contribute to trait-based and community-level analyses across aquatic and terrestrial taxa Apply advanced statistical approaches, including multivariate methods, to analyse complex ecological data Contribute to the integration and synthesis of experimental and observational datasets Lead and co-author scientific publications as part of the doctoral thesis Participate in group activities, meetings, and collaborative work within the TRACE project Contribute to student and team activities at the Lammi Biological Station The exact balance between analytical work and field-based activities will be adapted to the doctoral researcher’s background and training needs, while ensuring full participation in the core project activities.
