About Pavlov First Saint Petersburg State Medical University

Pavlov First Saint Petersburg State Medical University is a leading public medical training institution based in St Petersburg, Russia.

Founded in 1987, the university began its life as the Medical Institute for Women – the first medical training college in Europe to offer women medical degrees. Today, the university takes its name from the famous physiologist Ivan Pavlov, who became the first Russian Nobel Prize winner in 1904.

The university opened its courses up to male students in 1916, and takes great pride in its progressive origins. Its website champions a long list of notable alumni, including Anna Akimovna Sakhnovskaya, who is said to be the first woman in the world to be given a full professorship title in medicine.

There are six institutes for science-based learning at the institution and a further five scientific research centres. Medical courses taught at the university span sports medicine, dentistry, clinical psychology, pediatrics and nursing among others.

There is also a separate medical faculty with teaching for international students.

The academic year is split into two terms, with practical classes taking place in the summer term and a break in-between.

More than 5,000 students are enrolled at the university, including international students from more than 25 countries.

The main university campus is located in the heart of Saint Petersburg in the Petrogradsky District, next door to the famous Botanical Gardens and around 6.5km from the historic centre.

Campus facilities include a large library, basketball courts, and a gym. Students are encouraged to take part in extracurricular sports, and the university has a number of award-winning teams, including the women’s rowing team, which competes internationally.
