Established in 1912, the National Taipei University of Technology in Taiwan’s largest city, widely known as Taipei Tech, is one of Taiwan’s many fast-improving universities. More than 10% of founders, board directors, and CEOs of Taiwan’s stock companies are Taipei Tech alumni, who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in various professional fields.

Initially known as the School of Industrial Instruction during Taiwan’s 50 years as a Japanese colony, at first, its only departments were Woodwork, Metalwork and Electrical Engineering. Taipei Tech started providing five-year associate degree programmes in 1948, when it became known as Provincial Taipei Institute of Technology, a name it retained for half a century.

Granted university status in 1997, running more than 50 programmes at undergraduate, MA and PhD level, it now specialises in technology, design and management, although it also has a College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Like at other Taiwanese universities, many of which are also based in the city of Taipei, tuition fees at Taipei Tech have long been relatively low. Rich in history, Taipei, a world-famous technology hub, comprises good value restaurants, reliable public transport and plenty of parks and riverside paths.

Taipei Tech is located close to a metro station, the city centre and landmarks such as the Palace Museum and Taipei 101 skyscraper. Buses and high-speed trains connect it with Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.

The university’s priorities include creating and maintaining strong ties with businesses and industries. It has also been commended for its eco-friendly credentials. In 2010, it opened its award-winning Green Gate, a flagship main entrance which combines trees with public art.

Every year, Taipei Tech hosts a campus-wide party for international students to mingle with local students.

Through strategic partnerships forged by our faculty with industry, learners bridge theoretical knowledge with practical application in and out of the classroom. Such active & authentic learning opportunities ensures graduates step into their careers with applicable skills and competence. In research, SIT faculty aims to bridge knowledge creation and utilisation. Our faculty collaborates closely with industry on translational research and innovation with focus on addressing pertinent industry challenges to impact businesses.  The Singapore Teaching and Academic Research Talent (START) Scheme is co-funded by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and SIT to encourage and support outstanding young Singaporeans interested in pursuing an academic career at SIT. The Applied Research Fellowship aims to provide doctoral candidates who are about to complete or have recently completed their studies an opportunity to engage in advanced training and/or research at an overseas university for one year.  Besides financial support, awardees will also receive academic mentorship.  Upon completion of the Fellowship, awardees will be considered for Assistant Professorship. Eligibility and Selection Criteria Singapore citizen  Doctoral candidates who have recently completed or are about to complete their studies in a discipline under the supported areas for START below  Excellent academic record plus a high degree of proficiency and motivation for selected research area  Have been accepted or have applied for a postdoctoral training at a leading overseas university in a research area that is aligned with SIT’s supported areas  A keen interest in an academic career Value of Fellowship The Fellowship provides  Monthly stipend  Overseas maintenance allowance  Return economy airfare  Conference and fieldwork grants  Overseas medical insurance  Fellows will also each be assigned a SIT faculty mentor throughout their post-doctoral training and have opportunities to participate in faculty development programmes.  The fellowship is tenable for one year. On an exception basis, a two-year programme may be supported. Service Commitment One year for every year of sponsorship. Application Process Applications are open throughout the year via the various links below. Applications received before 15 January 2026 will be considered for the 2026 intake.   Interview by the respective clusters for shortlisted applicants will be conducted throughout the year.   Final Interview by the Panel for shortlisted applicants for the 2026 intake will commence in Mid-March to End April 2026.   Awards will be finalised by July 2026. Supported Areas for START - Business, Communication and Design  Financial and Sustainability Accounting: The measurement, reporting, and analysis of an organisation's financial performance alongside its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) and carbon footprint. Integrating traditional financial accounting principles with sustainability considerations to provide stakeholders with a more comprehensive view of a company's long-term value creation. Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE): The planning, management, and execution of business events, corporate gatherings, and large-scale conferences. This field is a key segment of the tourism and hospitality industry, requiring expertise in event management, business tourism, marketing, logistics, and stakeholder engagement.

Research Engineer (Microgrid Controller Design) - TKJ2

As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The Research Engineer (Microgrid Controller Design) will contribute to a one-year applied research project funded by the Singapore Army, focusing on the development of a mobile DC microgrid for military tactical applications. The role involves designing and implementing advanced control algorithms to coordinate multiple energy sources including battery energy storage systems (BESS), solar PV, and diesel generators, and dynamically assign grid-forming roles under varying operating conditions. The engineer will develop, simulate, and test controller logic using MATLAB/Simulink or similar environments, analyse performance across diverse scenarios, and document results for technical reporting. This position is ideal for candidates with a strong foundation in control systems, software development, and power or energy management applications. Key Responsibilities Participate in the research project to design a mobile DC microgrid controller for military tactical applications. Develop control algorithms for dynamic master selection, coordinating BESS, PV, diesel generators, and other sources. Implement predictive, rule-based, or optimisation-based control strategies using MATLAB/Simulink, Python, or embedded software tools. Integrate controller logic with the microgrid model and validate performance under different simulated conditions. Conduct testing of control strategies under various operating conditions such as extreme weather, load variation, equipment failure and deployment constraints. Prepare documentation, flowcharts, control logic diagrams, and controller specifications for the final report. Assist with procurement of software licences and technical equipment. Conduct Risk Assessments and ensure compliance with WSH regulations. Support supervision of capstone project students involved in the project. Work independently and collaboratively to maintain research software and project tools. To communicate and liaise with any internal and external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any other ad-hoc duties assigned by supervisor. Job Requirements Bachelor’s degree or above in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field from a recognised university. Strong programming skills in MATLAB/Simulink, Python, C/C++, or similar environments. Understanding of control systems, power electronics, or energy management strategies. Experience in microgrid controller design is advantageous. Familiarity with BESS control strategies, SOC management, or optimisation algorithms preferred. Support supervision of capstone project students involved in the project. Ability to implement and test algorithmic logic using simulation tools. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills. Excellent technical writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
