The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, officially founded in 1837, is now the largest state institution of higher learning in Greece, and among the largest universities in Europe. 

The university was founded by King Otto of Greece and was the first to exist in the liberated Greek state and surrounding area of the Southeast Europe as well. What began as a university of four faculties, has now doubled to eight to include: theology, philosophy, law, economics and the sciences. 

There are three campuses, with the main one in Ano Ilisia, Zografou, while other smaller faculties are located in Goudi and Dafni. 

The University Club, founded in 1923, operates as an annex of the university and a public Corporate Body,  aimed at improving the living conditions of students. Located in the centre of Athens, The University Club aspires to achieve its aim through the provision of free health care, meals, physical education equipment, the operation of health services, restaurants, a canteen, a gymnasium, a swimming pool, a reading room, a library, and computer labs.

While at university, the Club helps students in a non-academic manner organising lectures, concerts, choirs, exhibitions, theatre and dance performances, seminars, excursions in Greece and abroad and developing international student relations and exchanges In addition, it facilitates students after graduation by helping them search for work.

In 1993 the university alongside Japan’s Nippon Foundation established the creation of a Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund (SYLFF) programme in Athens, in order for the university to support students pursuing postgraduate and/or PhD studies in fields within the humanities and social science disciplines.

Notable alumni include Dimitri Nanopoulos, a Greek physicist who is one of the most regularly cited researchers in the world, Helene Ahrweiler, a Greek university professor and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Greece, and Xenophon Zolotas, a Greek economist and former interim prime minister of Greece.

You will spearhead experimental campaigns to evaluate process stability and material integrity, pioneering novel material combinations such as metal-metal composites and metal-composite joining techniques. By collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to push the boundaries of large-scale additive manufacturing, you will integrate process digitalisation with rigorous experimental design. Key responsibilities involve the manufacture of high-quality specimens for characterisation by research partners and the systematic analysis of experimental data to establish fundamental correlations between process parameters, microstructures, and mechanical properties. Ultimately, this work aims to refine DEDAM processes to ensure that fabricated components are meticulously optimised for specific mechanical load scenarios, with a particular interest in candidates capable of implementing advanced monitoring and automation frameworks to enhance system integration and data-driven insights. About You You will hold a PhD (or be close to completion) in in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field. You must have demonstrable relevant experience and achievements in process development and material characterisation. You will also possess proven knowledge of monitoring and control system development within the metal AM process. In addition, you will have a developing track record of publishing in high-quality journals, along with excellent communication, planning, and organisational skills, and a proven ability for problem-solving. You will also require Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS). The Faculty of Social Sciences invites applications for the position of UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN EUROPEAN STUDIES for a fixed-term position from 1 August 2026 to 31 July 2030, or as agreed The duties of a University Lecturer include providing teaching in accordance with degree requirements of the degree programmes within the Centre of European Studies (CES), supervising and examining theses, conducting research in their academic field, and contributing to the development of the Centre and to its shared responsibilities. Centre for European Studies (CES) is a multidisciplinary research unit within the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Helsinki, collaborating with other faculties. The Centre advances research and teaching in European Studies, understood broadly as an interdisciplinary field that examines European societies, their interconnections, and the institutions governing cooperation among them through contemporary and historical perspectives. The Centre serves as a host unit for researchers and projects, organises seminars and conferences, and coordinates the international, interdisciplinary Master’s Programme in European and Nordic Studies (ENS). The appointee will teach and supervise students in the ENS programme and contribute to the Centre’s research-led activities. The successful candidate will demonstrate wide-ranging familiarity with and understanding of the multiple subfields of European and EU studies. In the selection process, we value evidence of independent, high-quality international research that opens new perspectives in the field, a strong commitment to teaching and to the academic community, and a high standard of pedagogical competence. Teaching Profile The University Lecturer will teach and supervise students in the Master’s Programme in European and Nordic Studies (ENS), coordinated by the Centre for European Studies. Teaching responsibilities include, inter alia, coordination of the compulsory course Contemporary Research (ENS 301) and the Research Methods course (ENS 306). Additional duties comprise teaching of other thematic ENS courses, responsibility for one of the programme’s study modules, coordinating of internships and career-supportive activities, supervising and examining master’s theses. Academic study planning (HOPS) guidance for international master’s students constitutes an essential part of the position. In addition, the appointee will participate in academic administration and programme development. The primary language of instruction is English. Selection Criteria The successful candidate must: Hold an applicable doctoral degree by the application deadline. Demonstrate the ability to provide high-quality, research-based teaching. Show competence in supervising master’s theses and doctoral dissertations. Maintain an active research profile with international scientific publications.
